It is one year since I have been forced to go underground

It has been one year since I was forced into hiding. One year ago, on this day, I got a call from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). The man who made the call introduced himself as Major Farhan. There is no doubt that the call was from the DGFI headquarters at Kochukhet of Dhaka. I forwarded the phone number of the caller to the Daily Telegraph (UK) and Voice of America. They called up that number and confirmed later that it was a phone number of the DGFI in Dhaka.

When the first call came on August 5 (2019), I was away from my office. The caller asked a colleague to call him back after I returned. I called him back on my return. And the conversation with Major Farhan went on this way:

Major Farhan: F
Pinaki Bhattacharya: P

F: Assalamo Alaikum.
P: Walaikum Salam. Is Major Farhan available on this No.?
F: Yes, this is Farhan.
P: I think you called up my office looking for me. I am Pinaki.
F: Oh,â€ĻAssalamo Alaikum.
P: Walaikum Salam.
F: I hope you are alright.
P: Yes, I am fine.
F: Well..Are you in your office now?
P: Yes, I am.
F: I think your office is at Mirpur DOS. Am I correct?
P: Yes.
F: It’s very close from our office.
P: Yes.
F: I will be happy if you come down to our office for a cup of tea. I would like to speak to you on an issue.
P: Why don’t you come over to my office?
F: I am quite busy today. It’s difficult for me to come to your office today.
P: I cannot go to your office. Please come to my office, Brother.
F: Could you not come to our office?
P: No, I cannot. Please come down to my office.
F: It would have been good if you came here. I just want to discuss some ordinary issues.
P: No, problem. I am ready to talk on the matters. But, please come down to my office.
F: Understood.
P: Yes, please come down (to my office).
F: The caller identifier at my end is not working. Could you please tell me your mobile No?
P: Sure. It’s 01711XXXXXX
F: I have got it. It’s 01711XXXXXX.
P: Are you with the DGFI?
F: When do you remain present in your office usually?
P: Please give me a call before you come. You already have my (mobile) phone No.
F: Please give me your mobile No.
P: I have called you from my personal mobile No. So, you have it now.
F: Yes, exactly at that place.
P: Yes. Could you please tell what exactly you want to discuss with me?
F: There are some issuesâ€Ļ.But, I cannot talk about it over phone.
F: Yes.
P: Where exactly do you have your office? Where do you sit?
F: At this DGFI headquarters.
P: Is it at Kochukhet?
P: Why can you not share it with me over phone now?
F: I have to do everything following the official decorum. I have to speak on this issue when we meet.
P: Understood. When do you want to come to my office?
F: Let me see when I can make it.
P: Any afternoon is fine for me- today or tomorrow.
F: I cannot make it in the afternoon. In fact, I am busy with lots of work. So, it would have been better if you could meet in my office over tea.
P: I cannot go to your office.
F: Please note that I am sending you something like a formal invitation for tea.
P: No, I cannot go to your office. Please come to my office.
F: Many people come to our office and we discuss many issues during our meetings.
P: I do not want to enter that office. I will discuss everything with you openly. There will be no problem. I called you up almost as soon as you called me.
F: No problem. I know, you are a gent.
P: Please come to my office. We will chat over many issues. Please take your time and come down to my office.
F: Yes, I will come down when you want. When are you available usually?
P: Mostly I am at my office. Sometimes I go out of my office. But, you have got my mobile No. There will be no problem to contact me.
F: I will indeed give a knock (a call) before I come down.
P: Yes, please.
F: No problem.
P: Yes, please come down (to my office when you want).
F: Yes Brother, looking forward to see you soon.
P: Yes, please take care of yourself.
F: Assalamo Alaikum.
P: Walaikum Salaam.

I got a call from the other side ten minutes after I finished the above conversation and I was told that I must go to the DGFI headquarters that evening. I did not go to the DGFI headquarters and went underground. We all know that many civilians get calls from the DGFI this way before they become victims of enforced disappearance. International human rights group of FIDH recently revealed in a report how DGFI had been involved in human rights violations like cases like enforced disappearances of citizens. Former Chief Justice of Bangladesh Surendra Sinha wrote in his book how DGFI intimidates and threatens people in the interest of the government.

Two days after I went underground DGFI conducted a raid at my residence looking for me. A 24-hour surveillance system was placed surrounding my residence. I am dead sure that DGFI did not call me just for a cup of tea. They had something else in their mind. I stopped all sort of communications with people. My anxious father issued a statement on my situation and sent it to different media outlets. Only “Prothom Alo” published that statement after editing it the way the newspaper wanted. Pro-government groups turned ecstatic after they knew of the crackdown on me. The government placed a ban on my departure from the country.

My life has been disorderly since then. I am not into politics. I have no connection with any underground activity. I just keep on writing and all of my write-ups are available online. I also run a website which carries write-ups authored by me. I write mostly on deteriorating human rights situation and against the authoritarian rule in the country. I openly identify Sheikh Hasina’s rule as fascist.

I never believed I would be targeted in such crackdown by the government for my writing-related activities. I thought the government could file suits against me. I also thought I could face jail. I was ready for all such actions. But, I could never foresee it even in a nightmare that military intelligence agency could be used in attempt to make me another victim of enforced disappearance.

Many around advised me to hold talks with the government and reach a compromise to be able to return to normal life. But, I cannot stop my writing which is in the interest of human and democratic rights. I cannot be cowed into submission by the government and turn selfish. I hate to lead a life of that of a coward. In no situation can I reach any compromise with the fascists.

Before the Liberation War, members of Pakistani military intelligence agency picked up my uncle communist leader Rabi Bhattacharya and tortured him. They told him that they would destroy his family life. Are we going through an identical situation in Bangladesh now?
