On behalf of the family of Dr Pinaki Bhattacharya, issued on 11 August 2018, this statement is from his father Shyamal Bhattacharya for the news media.

“On August 5 one person, who introduced himself as Major Farhan, called up Pinaki Bhattacharya (PB) and asked him to come down to his office- the headquarters of DGFI at kachukhet** of Dhaka. PB said he would indeed talk to him. PB also added that he was a law-abiding citizen, had never indulged in any wrong act knowingly and he was not afraid to meet him. He requested Maj Farhan to come down to his office for the meeting. Some minutes later, phone call returned from the same person and this time he pressed PB to come down to the DGFI headquarters as soon as possile.

As far as we know, the illegal pressure from the DGFI to go to its headquarters made PB very anxious and he began worrying about his physical safety. Then he left his office and remains untraced since then (August 5). We have lost touch with him since then. We do not know where he is.

On August 6, some people came to his office and residence in search of him. They said they were from the DGFI. They did not carry any warrant. Why will the leading intelligence agency hunt him in such illegal way when no specific charge has been leveled against PB (by any agency)? All members in our family, relatives and his friends are extremely axious about him. We do not know where he is and if he is safe.

My family members and I were involved in different democratic struggles and the liberation war. PB too was a student movement leader in 1990s. He took part in the peoples struggle against Gen Ershads dictatorship and wrested victory for them.

Right from the time this country was known as East Pakistan, our self-respecting family took active part in all struggles to establish an independent and democratic society. During Pakistani period too our family became victim of police torture. My brothers spent long years in jail. There was a firing on the Communist prisoners in 1950 in Khapra ward of Rajshahi in which my brother was killed.

My son PB is a social and politics-conscious citizen. He is conscientious man fighting for justice and the rights of other citizens. He openly writes in the social media which is the most transparent and open platform political and cultural activities. We do not believe he has done anything which is wrong or illegal in the eyes of the law of the country. Why is the government using the intelligence agency to harass him this way?

I would like to ask our Prime Minister why PB is being hounded? Who are those people who came in search of him to his office and residence? Enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings are rampant in the country. Are the people who are searching for him have some sinister plan? I am a senior citizen and a father. I have also been a member of many cultural and political movements in the country. I respect the law and order system of the country. I am very anxious about my sons fate. I hope the government will help come this period of fear, anxiety and uncertainty of my family come to an end as soon as possible.

ডা: পিনাকী ভট্টাচার্যের পরিবারের পক্ষ থেকে তার পিতা প্রবীণ শিক্ষক শ্যামল ভট্টাচার্য সংবাদমাধ্যমে প্রকাশের জন্য আজ ১১ আগস্ট ২০১৮ শনিবার নিম্নলিখিত বিবৃতি প্রদান করেছেন।

গত ৫ অগাস্ট বিকেল পাঁচটায়, সেনা গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা ডিজিএফআই-এর পরিচয় দিয়ে জনৈক মেজর ফারহান ফোন করে কচুক্ষেতস্থ** গোয়েন্দা সদর দফতরে গিয়ে দেখা করতে বলেন ডা: পিনাকী ভট্টাচার্যকে। জবাবে পিনাকী বলেন, আলোচনা করতে তার কোনো সমস্যা নেই, তিনি স্বজ্ঞানে কোন অন্যায় কিংবা বেআইনি কাজ করেন না, তার কোন ভয় নেই। তিনি প্রস্তাব করেন, আলোচনা করতে চাইলে কথিত সেই মেজর ফারহান নিজেই যেন তার ব্যাবসায়িক অফিসে আসেন। তিনি তার অফিসে বসেই কথা বলতে চান।

এর অল্প কিছুক্ষণ পরে আবারো ফোন বাজে, তাকে পুনরায় ডিজিএফআই-এর দফতরে যাওয়ার জন্য চাপ প্রয়োগ করা হয়।

আমরা যতদূর জানতে পারি, তেমন পরিস্থিতিতে এই ধরনের বেআইনি চাপ প্রয়োগ ও হুমকির মুখে নিজের নিরাপত্তা নিয়ে আতঙ্কিত হয়ে তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে ডা: পিনাকী ভট্টাচার্য অফিস থেকে বেরিয়ে সম্ভবত আত্মগোপনে চলে যায়। তারপর থেকে পরিবারের কেউ তার সাথে এখনো পর্যন্ত যোগাযোগ করতে পারেনি। তিনি কোথায় আছেন, কেমন আছেন এর কোন হদিস আমাদের কাছে নেই!

পরের দিন ৬ অগাস্ট, ডিজিএফআই-এর পরিচয় দিয়ে কয়েকজন ব্যক্তি তার ব্যবসায়িক অফিসে এবং বাসায় খুঁজে আসে। কোন সুনির্দিষ্ট অভিযোগ ছাড়া গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার নামে এ ধরনের বেআইনি তৎপরতায় পরিবারের সকল সদস্য, আত্মীয়-স্বজন, বন্ধু-বান্ধব শংকিত এবং তার জীবনের নিরাপত্তা নিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন। আমরা জানি না সে কোথায় আছে, কতটুকু নিরাপদ আছে।

আমি এবং আমার পরিবার বাংলাদেশের স্বাধিকার আন্দোলন, মুক্তিযুদ্ধ এবং গণতান্ত্রিক সংগ্রামে সবসময়ই সম্পৃক্ত ছিলাম। পিনাকী নিজেও নব্বইয়ের ছাত্র আন্দোলনের রাজপথের নেতা। গ্রেফতার ও পুলিশি নির্যাতন মোকাবেলা করে নব্বইয়ে জেনারেল এরশাদের স্বৈরশাসনের বিরুদ্ধে গৌরবজনক লড়াইয়ে তারাই বিজয় ছিনিয়ে এনেছিল।

আমাদের পরিবার সেই পাকিস্তান আমল থেকেই একটি আত্মমর্যাদাসম্পন্ন স্বাধীন, গণতান্ত্রিক ও ন্যায়ভিত্তিক সমাজ প্রতিষ্ঠায় লড়াইয়ে সব সময় সক্রিয় থেকেছে, অংশ নিয়েছে। পাকিস্তান আমলেও আমাদের পুরো পরিবারের উপরে অবর্ণনীয় পুলিশি নির্যাতন হয়েছিলো। আমার ভাইদের জীবনের বড় অংশ জেলে কেটেছে। এখানে উল্লেখ্য যে, রাজশাহীর খাপড়া ওয়ার্ডে কমিউনিস্ট বন্দিদের উপর গুলি চালালে সেখানে যারা গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়েছিলেন, সেই বীরদের একজন ছিলেন আমার বড় ভাই। আমার ছেলে ডা: পিনাকী ভট্টাচার্য একজন সমাজ ও রাজনীতি সচেতন নাগরিক। দেশের অন্য সকল বিবেকবান মানুষের মতোই সে গণতান্ত্রিক আকাঙ্ক্ষা ও ন্যায়ের পক্ষে কথা বলে, লেখালেখি করে।

তার সকল কর্মকাণ্ড ও লেখালেখি, সব কিছুই সে প্রকাশ্যে করে থাকে। সোশাল মিডিয়া থেকে স্বচ্ছ ও প্রকাশ্য আর কি কোন সামাজিক, সাংস্কৃতিক ও রাজনৈতিক তৎপরতার প্লাটফর্ম আছে? এমন প্রকাশ্য কাজের মাধ্যমে ডা: পিনাকী ভট্টাচার্য দেশের কোন আইন লংঘন করেছেন বলে আমরা মনে করি না। তার পেছনে গোয়েন্দা বাহিনী লেলিয়ে দেয়ার কোন যুক্তিও আমরা খুঁজে পাই না!

দেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রীর কাছে আমরা জানতে চাই, কেন তার পিছু ধাওয়া করা হচ্ছে? ডিজিএফআই-এর নামে খুঁজতে আসা এই লোকগুলো আসলে কারা? গুম-খুনের এই ভয়াবহ সময়ে তাদের কি অন্য কোনো ভয়ংকর উদ্দেশ্য রয়েছে? একজন পিতা, দেশের আইন ও আদালতের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধাশীল একজন নাগরিক এবং প্রবীণ সাংস্কৃতিক ও রাজনৈতিক কর্মী হিসেবে আমি ও আমাদের পুরো পরিবার আজ যে আশংকা, আতঙ্ক ও অনিশ্চয়তায় ভূগছি, তা থেকে আমাদেরকে নিষ্কৃতি দিন।
