Barrister Mainul Hosein was attacked inside a court premises a few days ago while he was in police custody. This is the second such attack by goon-like political party supporters on someone inside a court premises in Bangladesh. The first such attack took place a few months ago when Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman was violently attacked by pro-government group inside Kushtia court premises.
Barrister Hosein was attacked by men who introduced themselves as supporters of the ruling Awami League party. Some opposition BNP supporters present in the court tried to thwart the attack on Hosein. Police later slapped violence-related cases against the BNP supporters, but took no action against the ruling party activists. Instances of such private vengeance-triggered attack on people in police custody inside a court premises is shocking, abominable and very rare across the world.
However, this government in Bangladesh is still claiming that it will hold “free and fair” elections in the country. We don’t know when this circus will end.

রংপুরে আদালত চত্বরে পুলিসি হেফাজতে থাকা ব্যারিস্টার মইনুল হোসেনের উপরে কয়েকদিন আগে হামলা হয়েছে। আদালতে বিচারপ্রার্থীর উপরে হওয়া সাম্প্রতিক নজিরবিহীন হামলার এটা দ্বিতীয় ঘটনা। কয়েকমাস আগে আদালত চত্বরে বিচারপ্রার্থী ‘আমার দেশ’ সম্পাদক মাহমুদুর রহমানের উপরে প্রথম সহিংস হামলা হয়েছিলো কুস্টিয়ার আদালত চত্বরে। সেই হামলা করেছিলো সরকার সমর্থকেরা।
ব্যারিস্টার মইনুল হোসেনের উপর যারা আক্রমণ করেছে তারা আওয়ামী লীগের পরিচয়েই করেছে। হামলা ঠেকাতে আসা বিএনপি নেতাকর্মীদের বিরুদ্ধে পুলিস মামলা দিয়েছে। অথচ, যারা হামলা করলো সেই শাসক দলের সমর্থকদের বিরুদ্ধে পুলিসের কোনো রা নেই।
আদালতে বিচারপ্রার্থীর উপরে প্রাইভেট প্রতিশোধ নেয়ার ন্যক্কারজনক নজির পৃথিবীতে আর কোথাও আছে কি? অথচ এরাই একটি অবাধ ও নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন উপহার দেবে বলে দাবী করে আসছে। এই তামাশার শেষ কোথায়?
