Although it is about a year old, this news has not lost its relevance.
Last year the home ministry of Bangladesh prepared a list of narcotics traders who were based in academic institutions. That list carried names of 38 narcotics traders who were from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology, Dhaka College and other private universities of Dhaka. Among them, 20 were leaders and workers of Chhatraleague, the student wing of ruling Awami League party. Two were from Juboleague or the youth wing of Awami League and one was a member of a law enforcement agency.
Name and identity of the other 15 remained unknown. The list made one fact clear that almost all narcotics traders there were from the student and youth wings of the ruling Awami League.
Now some other details about the list of the narcotics traders have come to light. Among those 20 Chhatraleague leaders, who were found involved narcotics trade, 8 are the organisation’s central committee leaders currently. Two in that list were former Chhatraleague central committee leaders and three happened to be the organisation’s Dhaka University unit leaders. Five were members of Jagannath University Chhatraleague. Two others were former top Chhatraleague leaders of Dhanmondi Police Station area.
Among the listed narcotics traders there were Anwar Hossain alias Anu, Najmul Haque and Nishita Iqbal, three central committee leaders of Chhatraleague and Ashiqul Pathan alias Setu and Darus Salam alias Shakil, the organisation’s two organising secretaries. Name of Rashedul Islam alias Rashed, Chhatraleague’s entertainment secretary, too featured in that list. Mojahidul Islam, deputy environment secretary of Chhatraleague, and Mahbubul Islam alias Prince, the organisation’s deputy international secretary, too were listed as narcotics traders.
Interestingly, a female Chhatraleague leader was also listed as a drugs peddler.
Chhatraleague leaders have also been caught being involved in extorting money from people, leaking question papers and other nefarious activities. A Chhatraleague leader celebrated the hundredth rape in the university some time ago. Now, they are leading also in drugs peddling.
However, many Western countries, India and some civil society members in Bangladesh still believe Awami League is a secular and progressive party. But, the fact is, this secular and progressive party is leading the society to utter ruin.

সেই সময়ে ঢাকাসহ বিভিন্ন জেলার শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানকেন্দ্রিক মাদক ব্যবসায়ীদের একটি তালিকা করেছিল স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়। তালিকায় ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, ইনস্টিটিউট অব লেদার ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং অ্যান্ড টেকনোলজি, ঢাকা কলেজসহ রাজধানীর বিভিন্ন বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে মাদক ব্যবসার সঙ্গে জড়িত ৩৮ জনের নাম ছিলো বা আছে।
তাঁদের মধ্যে ২০ জন হলেন ছাত্রলীগের নেতা-কর্মী। যুবলীগের দুজন নেতা, আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর একজন সদস্যের নামও রয়েছে তালিকায়। বাকি ১৫ জনের পূর্ণাঙ্গ নাম-ঠিকানা নেই। এর মানে, যাদের নাম পাওয়া গেছে তারা সবাই সরকারি দলের ছাত্র সংগঠনের নেতা। এমনকি দলের কেন্দ্রীয় নেতারাও মাদক ব্যবসার সাথে যুক্ত।
এই তালিকা ধরে অনুসন্ধানে দেখা গেছে, মাদক ব্যবসায় জড়িত ছাত্রলীগের নেতাদের মধ্যে আটজন ছাত্রলীগের বর্তমান কেন্দ্রীয় কমিটির নেতা, দুজন সাবেক কেন্দ্রীয় নেতা, তিনজন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শাখার সাবেক নেতা, পাঁচজন জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শাখার কর্মী এবং দুজন ধানমন্ডি থানা ছাত্রলীগের সদ্য সাবেক শীর্ষস্থানীয় নেতা।
তাঁদের মধ্যে রয়েছেন ছাত্রলীগের কেন্দ্রীয় কমিটির তিন সহসভাপতি- আনোয়ার হোসেন ওরফে আনু, নাজমুল হক ও নিশীতা ইকবাল এবং সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক আশিকুল পাঠান ওরফে সেতু ও দারুস সালাম ওরফে শাকিল, আপ্যায়ন সম্পাদক রাশেদুল ইসলাম ওরফে রাশেদ, উপপরিবেশবিষয়ক সম্পাদক মোজাহিদুল ইসলাম ওরফে সোহাগ ও উপ-আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পাদক মাহাবুবুল ইসলাম ওরফে প্রিন্স। তালিকায় ছাত্রীহলের একজন ছাত্রীনেত্রীও আছে।
ছাত্রলীগ শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান গুলোতে সন্ত্রাস চাঁদাবাজি প্রশ্ন ফাঁস সহ হেন দুষ্কর্ম নাই যে করে না। এই ছাত্রলীগের এক নেতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শততম ধর্ষণ উদযাপন করেছিলো মহাসমারোহে। এখন মাদক ব্যবসাতেও তারা নেতৃত্ব দিচ্ছে।
অবশ্য ভারত ও পশ্চিমের শাসক এমনকি কিছু সিভিল সোসাইটির সদস্যও মনে করে আওয়ামী লীগ একটি স্যেকুলার ও প্রগিতিশীল দল যেই স্যেকুলারিজম আর প্রগতিশিলতার ঠেলায় বাংলাদেশের দেশপ্রেমিক জনগনের নাভিশ্বাস উঠেছে।
