A government maternity hospital in Dhaka’s Azimpur refused admission to a pregnant woman in labor pains because she could not pay a bribe of 1,500 takas. Rejected by the hospital, the woman lay on the road in front of the hospital groaning in pains. Some people standing nearby informed the nurses in the hospital about the situation of the woman. But, none from the hospital came in to help. Some women who were standing nearby were moved by her plight. Using saris they covered her away from the crowd and helped deliver her baby. Sadly, the newborn died after some minutes.

The hospital authorities later said that the woman was mentally deranged for which she was turned away. Can a hospital really refuse to provide medical care to a pregnant woman if she is mentally deranged? I think the workers, including the boss, of the hospital should face punishment. Taxpayers’ money should not be spent to pay their salary. The identities of these people in the hospital should be exposed. They are enemies of the people. They don’t deserve space in a civil society.

ঢাকার আজিমপুর মেটার্নিটির চত্তরে, খোলা জায়গায় এক প্রসুতি প্রসব যন্ত্রনায় কাতরাচ্ছেন। উপস্থিত মহিলারা নিজেদের শাড়ী দিয়ে ঘিরে আব্রু রক্ষা করে বাচ্চাটার জন্ম দিলেন। বাচ্চাটা ভূমিষ্ঠ হয়েও বেঁচে ছিল। হাসপাতালের ডাক্তার নার্সদের ডাকা হয়েছে অনেকবার। কেউ এলোনা। এই প্রসুতিকে এই হাসপাতালের জরুরী বিভাগ থেকে তাড়িয়ে দেয়া হয়েছিল কিছুক্ষণ আগেই কারণ এই প্রসুতি ১৫০০ টাকা দিতে পারেন নাই। বাচ্চাটা কিছুক্ষণ পরে মারা যায়।

হাসপাতালের পরিচালক কর্মচারীদের পক্ষে সাফাই গান। তিনি বলেন এই মহিলা উন্মাদ। কোন হাসপাতাল কি উন্মাদ প্রসুতি মহিলাকে চিকিৎসাসেবা দিতে অস্বীকৃতি জানাতে পারে? আমি মনে করি এই হাসপাতালের পরিচালক এবং কর্মীদের শাস্তি হওয়া উচিত। এদের আমাদের করের পয়সায় বেতন দেয়া চলবেনা। এদের নাম জানতে চাই। এরা গণশত্রু। এরা সভ্য সমাজে বসবাসের অযোগ্য
