In her speech towards the nation the Prime Minister of Bangladesh recently said: “Traders, doctors, engineers, agriculturists, educationists, former bureaucrats, members of law enforcement agencies and armed forces, artists, litterateurs, journalists, religious leaders- all have supported Awami League (in the general election). No power can stop a political party when it gets such massive support from all classes in the society.”
Do the traders, doctors, engineers, members of the law enforcement agencies and armed forces and others select a government? Is it not the citizens who exercise their voting rights and elect a government? What percentage does the traders, doctors, engineers, members of the law enforcement agencies and armed forces etc. form of the population of the country?
Can the law enforcement agency and armed forces openly support a political party in any country? You cannot find a second example of such agencies- while they are state employees- supporting a political party this way in any democratic country. How did the authorities in Bangladesh assign these agencies with the duty to conduct the general election if they supported or were biased in favour of the ruling Awami League party this way?

প্রধানমন্ত্রী জাতির উদ্দেশ্যে দেওয়া ভাষণে বলেছেন ‘‘ব্যবসায়ী, চিকিৎসক, প্রকৌশলী, কৃষিবিদ, শিক্ষাবিদ, সাবেক আমলা, আইন-শৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী এবং সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর সদস্য, শিল্পী-সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, ধর্মীয় নেতা- সকলেই বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতি প্রকাশ্যে সমর্থন জানিয়েছেন। একটি সমাজের প্রায় সকল শ্রেণী-পেশার মানুষ যখন কোনো দলের প্রতি সমর্থন ব্যক্ত করেন, তখন তাকে কোনোভাবেই আটকে রাখা যায় না।’’
সরকার কি ব্যবসায়ী, চিকিৎসক, প্রকৌশলী, কৃষিবিদ, শিক্ষাবিদ, সাবেক আমলা, আইন-শৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী এবং সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর সদস্য, শিল্পী-সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, ধর্মীয় নেতারা সিলেক্ট করে? নাকি জনগণ প্রত্যক্ষ ভোট দিয়ে নির্বাচন করে? ব্যবসায়ী, চিকিৎসক, প্রকৌশলী, কৃষিবিদ, শিক্ষাবিদ, সাবেক আমলা, আইন-শৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী এবং সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর সদস্য, শিল্পী-সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, ধর্মীয় নেতারা দেশের জনগণের কত শতাংশ মানুষ? নাকি এদের সমর্থনের ভার দেশের ৯৯% জনগণের চাইতে বেশী?
আইন-শৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী এবং সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর সদস্যরা কি প্রকাশ্যে একটি রাজনৈতিক দলের প্রতি সমর্থন জানাতে পারেন? তারা তো রাষ্ট্রের কর্মচারী। রাষ্ট্রের কর্মচারী হয়ে পৃথিবীর কোন গণতান্ত্রিক দেশে প্রকাশ্যে একটি রাজনৈতিক দলকে সমর্থন দেয়ার নজির আছে? বাংলাদেশের নির্বাচন কমিশন কীভাবে এই সংস্থাগুলোকে নির্বাচনী দায়িত্ব পালন করতে দিলো যারা শাসক আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতি পক্ষপাতদুষ্ট?
