In her recent interview with BBC Bangla Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina- who came to power following a general election massively rigged by her party, said: “If it is the truth that people could not cast their votes (in the last general elections) they would have launched a nationwide movement by now and we would have lost power.”
Other Awami League (AL) leaders too speak almost exactly on the same line while issuing statements inside Bangladesh. When a public demand is raised by any political party, social organisation or an individual, AL leaders usually give three sorts of answers. When the political parties raise the public demands, they ask them to launch a movement. If the public demand comes through a social organisation, they say that Jamaat Shibir cadres have infiltrated the organisation and it should be dealt with a strict clampdown. And, in case the public demand is placed by some individuals from the society, the AL leaders say that they want an unpopular government to be elected and they accuse them of slandering the elected government.
However the fact is, during the last general election, Sheikh Hasina’s party cadres took control of the voting centre in connivance with police, illegally stamped the ballot papers in support of AL and stuffed the ballot boxes long before the polling began. And, no general election was actually held ahead of Hasina’s previous term.
In my another Facebook post earlier this week I wrote how the regime uses the state forces to routinely persecute the citizens, does not allow any political or democratic protests and have turned Bangladesh into a police state.
Hasina often comes up with some strange arguments. Following her logic we can ask: why does Hasina not reinstate one-party Bakshal System, which was introduced by her father, if it was that good? We all know that she never thinks of re-introducing this system in Bangladesh because she knows that the whole population of the country was against it.
People cannot launch a movement just whenever they want to. Nowhere in the world had the fascists ever allowed movements to be launched against their rules. They always persecuted and scared people into silence and forced the democratic space disappear from the country.
AL did not launch a mass protest or movement after Sheikh Mujib and his family members were murdered on August 15, 1975. It does not mean that AL or the people of the country supported the killings. If they launched a protest movement then, Khondaker Mostaq could not continue his rule. The situation in the country was not conducive to launch a movement then. This is the reason they did not launch the movement to overthrow Mostaq.

কয়েকদিন আগে বিবিসির সাথে সাক্ষাতকারে নৈশ ভোটের সরকার প্রধান শেখ হাসিনা গত প্রহসনের নির্বাচনের বিষয়ে সাফাই দিতে গিয়ে বলেছেন, “মানুষ যদি সত্যিই ভোট দিতে না পারতো, তাহলে তাদের ডাকে সাড়া দিয়ে মানুষ আন্দোলনে নামত এবং আমরা ক্ষমতায় থাকতে পারতাম না।”
ঠিক একই ধরণের যুক্তি আওয়ামী লীগ নেতারা দেশের অভ্যন্তরে ব্যবহার করেন। কোন জনগণের দাবী রাজনৈতিক দল বা সামাজিক সংগঠন বা ব্যক্তি উত্থাপন করলে তারা মোটামুটিভাবে তিন ধরণের উত্তর দেয়। রাজনৈতিক দলগুলো দাবী তুললে তারা বলে, আন্দোলন করুন। সামাজিক সংগঠনগুলো দাবী তুললে বলে এদের মধ্যে জামাত শিবির ঢুকে নাশকতা চালানোর চেষ্টা করছে তাই এদের শক্ত হাতে দমন করতে হবে, আর কোন ব্যক্তি কোন দাবী তুললে বলা হয় এরা অনির্বাচিত সরকার ক্ষমতায় এলে খুশী হন তাই নির্বাচিত সরকারের বিরুদ্ধে কুৎসা রটায়।অথচ আমরা সবাই জানি, হাসিনার সরকার এই টার্মে প্রহসনের নির্বাচনের মাধ্যমে জনগণের ভোটাধিকার হরণ করে ক্ষমতা ধরে আছে আর আগের টার্মের আগে আদৌ কোন নির্বাচনই হয়নি।
আমি আমার গত লেখায় দেখিয়েছি সরকার কীভাবে পুলিশি রাষ্ট্র কায়েম করে ভয় দেখিয়ে নজিরবিহীন নিপীড়ন নির্যাতন করে সকল লড়াই সংগ্রামের পথ রুদ্ধ করেছে।
এছাড়াও শেখ হাসিনার আর্গুমেন্টে মারাত্মক সমস্যা আছে। তার যুক্তির সূত্র ধরেই বলা যায়, বাকশাল ব্যবস্থা যদি এতোই ভালো হতো তাহলে হাসিনা তার পিতার প্রবর্তিত বাকশাল ব্যবস্থা কেন আবার চালু করছে না। এতেই তো পরিষ্কার হয়ে যায় বাকশাল ব্যবস্থা এতোই ঘৃনিত ছিলো যে তা আবার প্রবর্তন করার কথা হাসিনা চিন্তাও করেনা।
আন্দোলন করতে চাইলেই করা যায়না। পৃথিবীতে কোন ফ্যাসিস্ট শাসক তার বিরুদ্ধে কোন আন্দোলন করতে দেয়নি। সে ভয় দেখিয়ে দমন পীড়ন চালিয়ে সকল গনতান্ত্রিক স্পেইস নষ্ট করে দেয়।
১৯৭৫ এর পনোরোই আগষ্টে শেখ মুজিবকে যখন পরিবারসহ হত্যা করা হল তখন জনগন বা আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা কর্মীরা আন্দোলন করেনি। এর অর্থ কী এই যে জনগণ বা আওয়ামী লীগ এই হত্যাকাণ্ডকে সমর্থন করেছিলো? না, তারা ওই হত্যাকাণ্ড সমর্থন করেনি। আসলে তারা আন্দোলন করতে চাইলেও আন্দোলন করতে পারেনি কারণ আন্দোলন করার মতো গণতান্ত্রিক স্পেইস তখন দেশে ছিলো না। আর, আন্দোলন না হওয়ার জন্য তারা খন্দকার মুশতাককে ক্ষমতা থেকে তখন উত্খাতও করতে পারেনি।
