As soon as August 15 arrives, all members of the “sushil” (middle class intellectual elite), Leftist, secular and progressive groups, those who want to be sushil and even who are opposing the current fascist regime become engaged in singing the praises of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. There are some people who take to the policy to explain how their family protested to his assassination before criticising him to some extent. The moral strength of Awami fascism stems from such uncritical praises which overshadow the stories of misrule during his regime.
Their style of singing the praises of Mujib will make many feel that it was a period of prosperity for Bangladesh. But, that was not the case at all. It was exactly the opposite. It was a period of anarchy at extreme level. Copying in exams, corruption, vote rigging, robbing public funds, torture by ruling party cadres, famine, persecution, destruction of state institutions etc. continued at extreme level during that regime.
People have been forced to forget that Sheikh Mujib destroyed the just-born republic by establishing the BaKSAL single party system. The fourth amendment to the Constitution was made on January 25, 1975, to establish BaKSAL. Apart from introducing single party system, it took away people’s rights to “Writ”. The head of the state was given massive power and people lost their rights to participate in the operation of the state. And, Sheikh Mujib was made the President of the nation until his death.
Awami League, the currently ruling party in Bangladesh, insists, an elected government was overthrown on August 15, 1975. This is not true at all. The President was installed for life following the establishment of BaKSAL, without involving any process of election. The regular process of the election of the President was abrogated by making amendment to the Constitution.
It is the norm in a republic that people can elect or remove a ruler whenever they want. But, by installing Sheikh Mujib as the President of the country for life they destroyed the foundation of the republic of Bangladesh.
If Sheikh Mujib did not get assassinated in that unfortunate incident on August 15, 1975, he would have continued as the President until his death and Bangladesh would have remained under the rule of a single party. The introduction of BaKSAL system was a big political mistake a close confidante of Mujib and former prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed said: “You are closing all the doors to remove you peacefully from your position.”
Tajuddin Ahmed warned Sheikh Mujib about the consequences of one party system of Bakshal. The prophetic prediction by Mr Ahmed was proven to be true. BaKSAL was indeed responsible for what happened in Bangladesh on that fateful day of August 15, 1975.

১৫ আগষ্ট এলে বাংলাদেশের আপামর সুশীল, বাম, স্যেকুলার, প্রগতিশীল, সুশীল হতে চাওয়া বুদ্ধিজীবি এমনকি চলমান আওয়ামী ফ্যাসিবাদ বিরোধি সবাই আনক্রিটিক্যাল মুজিব বন্দনায় লিপ্ত হয়ে যায়। যারা একটু আধটু ক্রিটিক করেন তারাও আগে বলে নেন মুজিব হত্যার সময় তার পরিবার কেমনভাবে প্রতিবাদ করেছিলো। এই আন ক্রিটিক্যাল বন্দনায় ঢাকা পরে যায় মুজিব আমলের সকল দুঃশাসন। এই আনক্রিটিক্যাল বন্দনাই আওয়ামী ফ্যাসিবাদের নৈতিক শক্তি।
তাদের বন্দনার ভাষা শুনলে মনে হয় মুজিব আমলে দুধের নহর বয়ে যেতো। অথচ ঘটনা ছিলো ঠিক উল্টো। মুজিব আমল ছিলো এক ভয়ংকর দুঃশাসন। পরীক্ষায় নকল, দুর্নীতি, ভোট জালিয়াতি, দলীয় ক্যাডারদের ভয়ানক সন্ত্রাস, লুটপাট, দুর্ভিক্ষ, মিথ্যাচার, অকল্পনীয় দমন পীড়ন, রাষ্ট্রীয় সকল প্রতিষ্ঠান ধ্বংস করা সবকিছুই হয়েছে অবাধে।
শুধু তাই নয় বাকশাল কায়েম করে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মধ্যে দিয়ে গড়ে ওঠা রিপাবলিককেই যে শেখ মুজিব ধ্বংস করে দিয়েছিলো সেই সত্যটাও ভুলিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে । বাকশাল প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য যে চতুর্থ সংশোধনী আইন প্রনয়ন করা হয়েছিলো তা একদলিয় শাসন চালু করার পাশাপাশি রাষ্ট্রের নগরিকের সংক্ষুব্ধ হবার মৌলিক অধিকার, রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনায় জনগনের অংশগ্রহণ রদ করেছিল, রাষ্ট্রপ্রধানকে লাগামহীন ক্ষমতা দিয়েছিল এবং শেখ মুজিবকে নির্বাচন ছাড়াই আজীবন রাষ্ট্রপতি বানিয়েছিলো।
সংবিধান (চতুর্থ সংশোধনী) আইনের ৩৪ ধারায় বলা হয়েছিলোঃ রাষ্ট্রপতি সংক্রান্ত বিশেষ বিধানঃ সংবিধানে যাহা বলা হইয়াছে তাহা সত্যেও এই আইন প্রবর্তনের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে- (ক) এই আইন প্রবর্তনের অব্যাবহতি পুর্বে যিনি বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি-পদে অধিষ্ঠিত ছিলেন, তিনি রাষ্ট্রপতি পদে থাকবেন না এবং রাষ্ট্রপতির পদ শূন্য হইবে; (খ) জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি হইবেন এবং রাষ্ট্রপতির কার্যভার গ্রহন করিবেন এবং উক্ত প্রবর্তন হইতে তিনি বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি-পদে বহাল থাকিবেন যেন তিনি আইনের দ্বারা সংশোধিত সংবিধানের অধীনে রাষ্ট্রপতি-পদে নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন।“
আওয়ামী লীগ বলে ১৯৭৫ এর ১৫ ই আগষ্টে নির্বাচিত সরকার উতখাত করা হয়েছিলো। কথাটা মোটেই সত্য নয়। বাকশালের রাষ্ট্রপতি অনির্বাচিত এবং আজীবনের জন্য ছিলো। নির্বাচন করার বাধ্যবাধকতা থেকে কলমের খোচায় তাঁকে মুক্তি দেয়া হয়েছিলো।
একটা রিপাবলিকের মৌলিক বৈশিষ্ট্য যে জনগণ তার শাসক নির্বাচিত করতে পারবে আর চাইলে তাকে অপসারন করতে পারবে। শেখ মুজিবকে আজীবন ভোট ছাড়া রাষ্ট্রপতি ঘোষণা করে কার্যত বাংলাদেশ নামের রিপাবলিকেকেই ধ্বংস করে দেয়া হয়েছিলো।
শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ১৫ আগষ্টের দুঃখজনক ঘটনায় নিহত না হলে তিনি যতদিন বাঁচতেন ততদিন বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি থাকতেন এবং সেই একদলীয় শাসনই থাকতো। এই রাজনৈতিক ভুলের মাসুল কী হতে পারে সেটা শেখ মুজিবের ঘনিষ্ঠ সহচর, মুক্তিযুদ্ধকালীন প্রবাসী সরকারের প্রধানমন্ত্রী তাজউদ্দিন আহমেদ বলেছিলেনঃ
“আপনাকে শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে ক্ষমতা থেকে সরানোর সব রাস্তাই আপনি বন্ধ করে দিলেন।”
তাজউদ্দিন আহমেদের প্রফেটিক ভবিষ্যতবাণীই সত্য হয়েছে। ১৫ আগষ্ট ঘটার দায় বাকশালের। তাই ১৫ আগষ্টকে বাকশাল থেকে বিযুক্ত করে মূল্যায়নের সুযোগ নেই।
