This horrifying video footage was secretly shot at Jahangeernagar University in Bangladesh. It carries the footage of torture of some students at the guest room or public room which is run by the Chhatraleague- the student wing of Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Awami League party.
In the video we find some students being forced to jump as some others, who appear to be leaders or supporters of Chhatraleague, are beating them up badly. The victims are being verbally abused with foulest of languages and they are crying, the video shows.
There are hundreds of such torture cells across higher level educational institutions in Bangladesh. Some institutions even have more than one such rooms where students are tortured.
In these rooms, the newcomers are forced or intimidated into joining Chhatraleague. Many of those who are tortured in these rooms even turn persecutors, and are found to torture other newcomers in the same style later. Those who fail to show their allegiance to Chhatraleague are thrown out of the hostels, after being tortured. Unable to bear with the torture, which includes violent thrashing, some even collapse to death- as it happened in the case of Abrar, a second-year student at BUET a few days ago.
The killers of Abrar admitted that they had tortured Abrar following command from the high-ups and this was the norm in all cases of what they called “punishments”. They had no way to disobey the commands.
Jion, one of the suspects in the killing of Abrar, said, “We would beat up many junior and even senior students in the same style. Abrar died accidentally. Those who did not agree with our political ideas were hauled up to our room and beaten up there. The high command admired us whenever we beat up someone and threw him out of the hall. The system has groomed us to be barbaric this way.”
This is the way Sheikh Hasina’s government has unleashed a reign of terror by encouraging persecution to silence dissenting opinions. You will not find any other country in the world where such torture cells exist inside academic institutions. In Bangladesh there are hundreds of such torture cells that illegally operate under the patronage of the ruling party and the government.
Immediately after Abrar was murdered, hundreds of students shared their experiences of being victims of torture by Chhatraleague leaders. The government blocked access to that site soon after it became viral.
Hasina government has constantly been inventing new tools to stay in control of her fascist rule. The government stands accused in over 500 cases of forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the country. The accusations against the Bangladesh government have been presented also before the UN Human Rights Council.
International human rights groups should plan to document the incidents of barbaric levels of human rights violations inside the torture cells of Bangladesh’s educational institutions. The UN should set up international fact-finding missions to investigate the functioning of the torture cells. Those found guilty should be dragged to an international court. And, steps should also be taken to blacklist Chhatraleague internationally as a terrorist organisation.

এই ভয়াবহ ভিডিও ফুটেজটি সংগোপনে তোলা হয়েছে জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে। এখানে শাসক দল আওয়ামী লীগের ছাত্র সংগঠন ছাত্রলীগ পরিচালিত গেস্ট রুম বা গণ রুম নামের টর্চার সেলের নির্যাতনের কিছু রোমহর্ষক দৃশ্য ধরা পড়েছে।
ভিডিওতে দেখা যাচ্ছে কিছু ছাত্রকে পিটানো হচ্ছে, লাফাতে বাধ্য করা হচ্ছে, অকথ্য ভাষায় গালাগালি করা হচ্ছে এবং নির্যাতিতরা কাঁদছে। সারা দেশের সকল উচ্চ শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে এমন এক বা একাধিক টর্চার সেল চলছে।
এই টর্চার সেলে নবাগত ছাত্রদের নির্যাতন করে ভয় দেখিয়ে দলভুক্ত করা হয়, আবার এই নির্যাতিতদের অনেকেই পরে একসময় সিনিয়র হয়ে নবাগতদের এইভাবে টর্চার করে। যারা ছাত্রলীগের অনুগত হয়না তাদের হয় হল থেকে বের করে দেয়া হয় বা অনেক ক্ষেত্রে পিটাতে পিটাতে মেরে ফেলা হয়। ঠিক এমন একটা পিটুনির ফলেই বুয়েট প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের দ্বিতীয় বর্ষের ছাত্র আবরার নিহত হয় কয়েকদিন আগে।
আবরারের খুনীরা স্বীকার করেছে এটাই নাকি রীতি এবং উপরের নির্দেশ এমনভাবে আসে যে সেটা না মেনে সেই খুনীদের কোন উপায় ছিলোনা।
আবরারের একজন হত্যাকারী ছাত্রলীগ নেতা জিয়ন আদালতে বলেছে, “সিনিয়র জুনিয়র যে-ই হোক, আমরা তাদের এভাবে পেটাতাম। আবরার মারা গেছে দুর্ঘটনাক্রমে। আমাদের মতের সঙ্গে না মিললে কাউকে পিটিয়ে বের করে দিতে পারলে ছাত্রলীগের হাই কম্যাণ্ড আমাদের প্রশংসা করত। সিস্টেমটাই আমাদের এমন নিষ্ঠুর বানিয়েছে।”
ঠিক এভাবেই প্রহসনের নির্বাচন করে ক্ষমতা আঁকড়ে থাকা হাসিনা সরকার ভয়ের রাজত্ব কায়েম করে বাংলাদেশ শাসন করছে। পৃথিবীতে এমন উদাহরণ নাই যে শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে টর্চার সেল থাকে। আর, একটা দুইটা নয় শত শত টর্চার সেল।
আবরারের মৃত্যুর পরে একটি ওয়েবসাইটে টর্চার সেলে নির্যাতিত ছাত্ররা শতশত ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতার কাহিনী শেয়ার করছিলো। সেই সাইট সরকারি নিয়ন্ত্রণ প্রতিষ্ঠান বি টি আর সি বন্ধ করে দেয়।
হাসিনা সরকার ফ্যাসিবাদী নিয়ন্ত্রণের নতুন নতুন অবিশ্বাস্য টুল আবিষ্কার করেছে। এই সরকারের বিরুদ্ধে মানবাধিকার সংগঠনের হিসাবে পাঁচ শতাধিকের বেশি গুম-খুনের অভিযোগ আছে। এ ছাড়া জাতিসঙ্ঘের হিউম্যান রাইটস কাউন্সিলে তোলা অভিযোগও আছে।
আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার সংগঠনগুলো বাংলাদেশের শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান গুলোতে টর্চার সেলের নজিরবিহীন ও ভয়াবহ মানবাধিকার লংঘনের ঘটনাকে ডকুমেন্ট করার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নেবে বলে আশা করি। জাতিসংঘের ফ্যাক্ট ফাইন্ডিং মিশন গঠন করে এই টর্চার সেলের আন্তর্জাতিক তদন্ত হওয়া প্রয়োজন এবং দোষীদের খুঁজে বের করে আন্তর্জাতিক আদালতে তোলা দরকার। এর পাশাপাশি সন্ত্রাসী সংগঠন হিসেবে ছাত্রলীগকে আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে তালিকাভুক্ত করার জন্য পদক্ষেপ নিতে হবে।
