Beating up innocent citizens at police stations or extorting money from people, after threatening to kill them in crossfire is a commonplace in Bangladesh now. After such incidents take place no punitive action is taken against any police personnel except some of them being closed. Will the police authorities tell us how many police officers were closed in the past decade and how exactly the charges against them were settled?
In the latest case, four police officers of Bogra Sadar police station have been accused of picking up one Sohan Babu Adar and torturing him inside the police station. Sanatan Chakraborty, Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) of Sadar Circle, Bogra, said: “Superintendent of Police is away in Rajshahi on an emergency assignment. Action will be taken against the guilty if they are found guilty in departmental inquiry.”
Why will the police conduct inquiry in a case where some policemen are accused? We all know how some policemen helped officer-in-charge Moazzem remain absconding after he was identified as a suspect in the Nusrat murder case. We also remember how some policemen beat up internationally acclaimed photographer and activist Shahidul Alam and left him bloodied, after picking him up from his home.
I happen to know Sanatan Chakraborty. He reached the spot with his force and rescued me when I was violently targeted in Bogra in January last year. He also said to me to keep him informed in advance if I visited Bogra again. I identified one of the attackers, I told him. I also requested him to conduct an inquiry to find out the people who planned to assault me.
Later, from a trusted source I knew that Mr Chakraborty had found out my attackers and met them. After they showed him some of my write-ups, he said that he had made a mistake by going to rescue me and he would not try to help me in future if I faced any trouble, my source reported.
Is Mr Chakraborty not an employee of the state? Will he not provide security to a citizen because the person is a critic of the government? I look forward to meet Mr Chakraborty one day and ask this question to him. I hope he will try to come up with a logical answer. I will also ask him why he did not conduct an inquiry and take action against those who planned the assault on me.

থানায় নিরপরাধ নাগরিককে ডেকে এনে পিটানো, ক্রস ফায়ারের ভয় দেখিয়ে টাকা আদায় করাএসব বাংলাদেশে স্বাভাবিক ঘটনায় পর্যবসিত হয়েছে। এসব ঘটনায় সংশ্লিষ্ট পুলিশকে ক্লোজ করা ছাড়া আর কোন পদক্ষেপের কথা জানা যায়না। আমরা পুলিশের কাছে জানতে চাই, গত দশ বছরে কয়জন পুলিশকে ক্লোজ করা হয়েছিলো, কী অভিযোগ ছিলো এবং সেই অভিযোগের নিষ্পত্তি হয়েছে কিনা?
এই সাম্প্রতিক ঘটনায় যেখানে পুলিশের চার সদস্য সোহান বাবু নামের এক ব্যবসায়ীকে থানায় ধরে এনে নির্যাতনের অভিযোগ এসেছে, সেই বিষয়ে সদর সার্কেলের অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার (মিডিয়া) সনাতন চক্রবর্তীর বরাতে বলা হচ্ছে, ‘জরুরি কাজে এসপি রাজশাহী আছেন। তিনি এলে তদন্ত সাপেক্ষে জড়িতদের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।’
পুলিশের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগের তদন্ত পুলিশ কেন করবে? এই পুলিশই তো নুসরাত হত্যার আসামী ওসি মোয়াজ্জেমকে পালিয়ে যেতে সহায়তা করেছে। আবার এরাই কি দারুণ তৎপরতায় গভীর রাতে শহীদুল আলমের মতো আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে সন্মানিত ও শ্রদ্ধাভাজন শহীদুল আলমকে বাসা থেকে তুলে নিয়ে গিয়ে ডিবি অফিসে পিটিয়ে রক্তাক্ত করেছিলো।
এই সনাতন চক্রবর্তী বাবুকে আমি চিনি। গত ২০১৮ সালের জানুয়ারীতে বগুড়ায় যখন আমার উপরে হামলা প্রচেষ্টা হল তখনএই সনাতন বাবুই ফোর্স নিয়ে এসে আমাকে উদ্ধার করেছিলেন। তিনি এটাও বলেছিলেন, এরপরে বগুড়ায় গেলে আমি যেন আগেই পুলিশকে জানাই। আমিও বলেছিলাম কারা হামলা করতে এসেছিলো সেটা যেন তিনি খুজে দেখেন। আমি একজনকেচিনেছি সেটাও আমি তাকে বলেছিলাম।
আমি পরে বিশ্বস্ত সুত্রে জানতে পেরেছি, পরদিন আমার উপরে যারা হামলা করতে এসেছিলো তারাই সনাতন বাবুকে আমার লেখালেখির স্যাম্পল দেখানোর পরে নাকি তিনি বলেছিলেন, “আমার (সনাতন বাবু) তাকে (পিনাকী) উদ্ধার করতে যাওয়াউচিত হয়নি, আমি এরপরে আর যাবোনা এমন কিছু ঘটলে।”
সনাতন বাবু কি রাষ্ট্রের কর্মচারী নন? তিনি কি একজন সরকারের সমালোচককে নিরাপত্তা দেবেন না? সনাতন বাবুর সাথে আমি নিশ্চয়ই একদিন দেখা করে এই প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞেস করবো। আশা করি সনাতন বাবুর একটা যৌক্তিক উত্তর তৈরি থাকবে। আমি এটাও জিজ্ঞেস করবো, সেই হামলা প্রচেষ্টার বিষয়ে তিনি কেন কোন তদন্ত করলেন না।
