Police in Bangladesh have filed a criminal case against a baby accusing him of attacking people with a machete when he was 22 days old. According to police, the 3-week-old baby injured members of an opponent family and took control of a disputed land. Recently the mother of the baby carried the 10-month-old in his arms to a Dhaka court and moved a bail application for him.
According to police, the machete attack by the baby took place in Dhaka 9 months ago. A police officer of a model police station in the city investigated the case before filing the charge-sheet. In this case, police have named a person as co-accused who had died 3 years before the reported attack took place- now it has come to light.
In the recent past, police in Bangladesh have killed many young people after branding them as militants or terrorists and the international community appreciated their so-called counter-terrorism actions. Should the international community accept the police or state versions of the counter-terrorism operations as credible as Bangladesh keeps on flaunting around?
We have every reason to believe that the charges of terrorism or militancy against at least many young people in Bangladesh are bogus. It means, many of those who are being branded as terrorists and being killed in shoot-outs by police, might be innocent as well.
এই শিশুটির বয়স যখন ২২ দিন তখন তাকে পুলিশ একটি রামদা দিয়ে আক্রমণ করে আহত করার মামলায় আসামী করে। পুলিশের রিপোর্ট অনুযায়ী, এই সদ্যোজাত শিশু রামদা দিয়ে আক্রমণ করে প্রতিপক্ষকে আহত করে জমির দখল নিয়েছিলো। এই শিশুর বয়স এখন ১০ মাস। সে মায়ের কোলে চেপে আদালতে জামিন নিতে এসেছে।
পুলিশের ভাষ্যমতে এই শিশুটির দ্বারা রামদা দিয়ে ঢাকা শহরেই আক্রমণটা হয়েছে নয় মাস আগে। রাজধানীর মিরপুর মডেল থানার পুলিশ কর্মকর্তার তদন্তের পর এই মামলায় চার্জশিট দেয়া হয়। শুধু তাই নয় এই মামলায় এমন একজনকে আসামী করা হয়েছে যে ঘটনা ঘটার তিন বছর আগে মারা গেছে।
সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে বাংলাদেশে পুলিশ অনেককেই জঙ্গি অথবা সন্ত্রাসী হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করে হত্যা করেছে এবং আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায় এগুলোকে সন্ত্রাসবিরোধী সফল পদক্ষেপ বলে সরকারের প্রশংসাও করেছে। পুলিশ এবং সরকারের কাউন্টার টেররিজমের এই সব বয়ান কি আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায়ের সবক্ষেত্রে বিশ্বাসযোগ্য বলে গ্রহণ করা উচিত?
আমাদের এটা বিশ্বাস করার কারণ আছে, যে অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই অনেক তরুণ-যুবকের বিরুদ্ধে সন্ত্রাস এবং জঙ্গীবাদের অভিযোগ মিথ্যা। এর অর্থ হচ্ছে, বাংলাদেশে যাদের জঙ্গী আখ্যা দিয়ে হত্যা করা হচ্ছে, তারা আদতে নির্দোষ এবং নিরপরাধ মানুষও হতে পারে।
