She is Mayisha Fahmida Semontee, a lovely little girl, full of life. These photos were shot some months ago. Sadly, she is not here anymore. Two weeks ago she committed suicide.
She was a tenth grade student at YMCA School in Bogra. Her father Hasanul Mashreque was a senior student in our school in Bogra when I was a student there. We used to call him Rumonbhai. Although I visited Bogra several times in recent years, I did not happen to meet Rumonbhai.
I have just got the shocking news of Semontee’s suicide from a Facebook post of Rumonbhai. Then, I spoke to distraught Rumonbhai and knew the whole story.
Some wicked youths collected photos from the mobile phone of Semontee and began blackmailing her. Rumonbhai took her daughter to the cybercrime division of Bogra police aiming to file a complaint against those youths. After the father and daughter met police officials several times over five days last month he was advised to move the court. Semontee felt disappointed, depressed and ashamed. On June 18, she ended up committing suicide.
The cybercrime control department does not take any step to punish the real cyber criminals. The department has been launched to monitor the Facebook posts of us, who criticise the government on different issues, and punish the political opposition workers. For such reasons the cybercrime officials did not pay heed to the appeals from Semontee. In such helpless situation victims like her are forced to end their lives.
Bogra Police are responsible for Semontee’s death. They could have stopped her from taking such extreme step. Police sided with the culprits in the case and ignored her appeals. This forced her to commit suicide. Now, the police should swing into action and bring those youths to justice. This way police will be able to atone for their sins at least to some extent.

ফুলের মতো এই মেয়েটির নাম মায়িশা ফাহমিদা সেমন্তী। এইসব ছবি সেমন্তীর অল্প কিছুদিন আগের। আজ সেমন্তী এই ইহলোকে নেই। দু’সপ্তাহ আগে সে আত্মহত্যা করেছে।
বগুড়া ওয়াই এম সি এ স্কুলের ক্লাস টেনের ছাত্রী ছিলো সেমন্তী। ওর বাবা আমাদের স্কুলের বড় ভাই ছিলেন। উনার নাম হাসানুল মাশরেখ; আমরা রুপন ভাই বলে ডাকতাম। সেমন্তীকে আমি কখনো দেখিনি। বগুড়ায় মাঝে মধ্যে যাওয়া হলেও অনেক বছর রুপন ভাইয়ের সাথে দেখা হয়নি।
রুপন ভাইয়ের ফেইসবুক পোস্ট থেকে জানলাম উনার বড় মেয়ে সেমন্তীর আত্মহত্যার খবর পেলাম। কাল শোকে দুঃখে ভেঙ্গে পড়া রুপন ভাইয়ের সাথে কথাও হলো। জানতে পারলাম কীভাবে সেমন্তীর মোবাইলের কিছু ছবি নিয়ে বগুড়ার কিছু বখাটে ছেলে তাকে ব্ল্যাকমেইল করছিলো। রুপন ভাই বগুড়া পুলিশের সাইবার ক্রাইম বিভাগে সেমন্তীকে নিয়ে অভিযোগ জানাতে গিয়েছিলেন। পুলিশ পাঁচদিন ঘুরিয়ে রুপন ভাইকে মামলা করার পরামর্শ দেয়। লজ্জায় অভিমানে হতাশায় গতমাসের ১৮ তারিখে সেমন্তী আত্মহত্যা করে।
সাইবার ক্রাইম ডিপার্টমেন্ট আসল সাইবার ক্রিমিন্যালদের শায়েস্তা করার জন্য কোনো পদক্ষেপ নেয়না। এই ডিপার্টমেন্ট তো খোলাই হয়েছে আমার মতো সরকারের সমালোচনাকারীদের ফেইসবুক পোষ্ট মনিটর করার জন্য আর বিরোধী রাজনৈতিক কর্মীদের শায়েস্তা করার জন্য। সেমন্তীর অন্তিম ফরিয়াদ তাই তাদের কানে পৌঁছায়না। অভিমানে আর লজ্জায় আত্মহত্যা করা ছাড়া তাদের আর উপায় থাকেনা।এই মৃত্যুর দায় বগুড়া পুলিশের। সেমন্তীর মৃত্যু ঠেকানো যেত। কিন্তু পুলিশ কার্যত বখাটেদের পক্ষ নিয়েছে জন্যই সেমন্তীকে আত্মহত্যার পথ বেছে নিতে হল। তবে এখনো সময় আছে সেই বখাটেদের ধরে বিচারের কাঠগড়ায় দাড় করাতে পারলে বগুড়া পুলিশের পাপ কিছুটা লাঘব হবে।
