Police in Bangladesh have filed a criminal case against a beggar who is physically crippled- his right hand is completely disabled since his birth and the left is very weak. Police charged that Tara Mia attacked them with machete, rod and hockey stick on December 28.
Ahead of the December 30 farcical general election police framed thousands of people in false violence-related cases and spread a reign of terror across the country. In recent months police filed cases against people who had died long before the reported violence took place. Cases were filed against people who were away from the country at the time of the violence. Even very sick and infirm people have been sued for allegedly launching violent attacks on police.
The state forces, enjoying political patronage, have been resorting to new ways to harass and torture many innocent people. When will we see these state forces being held accountable for their misdeeds?

বাংলাদেশের পুলিশ তারা মিয়া নামের এই পঙ্গু ভিক্ষুকের বিরুদ্ধে ডিসেম্বরের ২৮ তারিখে পুলিশের উপরে লাঠি, হকি স্টিক, রড নিয়ে হামলা করে পুলিশকে আহত করার অভিযোগে মামলা দিয়েছে।তারা মিয়ার এক হাত জন্ম থেকেই ব্যবহারের অনুপযোগী; আরেক হাত ঠিকমতো ব্যবহারও করতে পারেন না, নাড়াচাড়া করতে কষ্ট হয় বাকি হাতটা।
তথাকথিত নির্বাচনের আগে আতঙ্ক ও ত্রাস ছড়ানোর জন্য পুলিশ এভাবেই হাজার হাজার মিথ্যা আর গায়েবী মামলায় অসংখ্য মানুষকে হয়রানি করে সাম্প্রতিক মাসগুলোতে এমনকি গ্রেফতার থাকা অভিযুক্তকেও নাশকতার মামলায় সম্পৃক্ত দেখিয়ে মামলা করে পুলিশ আদালতে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করেছে। কথিত ঘটনা ঘটার অনেক আগেই মৃত এমন ব্যক্তির বিরুদ্ধেও মামলা করেছে। মারাত্মক রোগগ্রস্থকে এমনকি প্রবাসে অবস্থানরতদের নামেও মামলা দেয়া হয়েছে।
রাজনৈতিক আস্কারা পেয়ে এই রাষ্ট্রীয় বাহিনী জনগনকে নিপীড়নের নিত্য নতুন তরিকা আবিষ্কার করছে। এই বাহিনীর কোন জবাবদিহির জায়গা তৈরি হবে কি?
