Police in Bangladesh are corrupt and fiendish, apart from being oppressive. They indulge in all sorts of crimes. They resorted to illegal means to help Awami League grab power and form the current government. So, the government has given the police free rein now and they have become more desperate and oppressive. Anyone criticising the police faces terrible level of reprisal from them.
When Ayesha Siddika Minni, a just-married woman, was returning from college along with her husband some goons of Awami League pounced on Rifat Sharif, the husband, and hacked him to death. The incident of the killing in Barguna was caught in some video clips which showed that Minni tried to save her husband from the machete attacks.
All of the attackers were clearly identified from the video clips. Following investigations by a section of media it was found that disputes over some narcotics-related business deals led to the killing of Rifat. It was also reported that Sunam Chandra Debnath, son of Awami League MP Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, was a patron of the illicit narcotics trade in the area.
Soon after the investigative reports were published in the media police swung into action in attempt to save Sunam. The main accused in the Rifat killing case was shot dead by police in a so-called crossfire. After Rifat’s father accused that Minni was responsible for his son’s killing, it was reported that it was Sunam who made the father slap the accusation. The social media was used to mobilise opinions against Minni and soon she was picked up by police and remanded in custody.
Immediately after Minni was remanded in custody I wrote in a Facebook post that we knew of many cases of police torture like stuffing boiled eggs and bottles up the rectums of people held in remand. Did the court not know how Minni could face torture in police remand, I asked in my post. I hinted that Minni would face sexual torture in police remand.
Now, my worst fear about Minni has come true, very sadly.
When Minni’s parents went to see her in a jail a few days ago, she said she had been tortured.
“Minni somehow tried to keep herself erect on her legs with support from two female prison guards. Her relatives broke into tears to find her in that condition. The male relatives asked her some questions. But, she could not stand on her legs on her own and was tilting on one side or the other. Two female guards tried their best to keep her upright (during the meeting).
There is no doubt that Minni has been abused sexually in police remand. The policemen fulfilled their sexual fantasies by raping her the way they liked. These Bangladeshi policemen are the successors of those Pakistani police who stuffed boiled eggs down the vagina of farmer leader Ila Mitra and tortured her.
People in Bangladesh are aware of this fact that police often torture people in custody or remand inhuman ways. But they are too afraid to speak up against such practice. United Nations, international human rights groups and women groups should look into such cases of torture in police custody in Bangladesh. If possible, they should push for an inquiry by an international expert team.
During the safe road movement in 2018 Naoshaba, a female actor, was taken into police remand and made be become very sick. Naoshaba could not stand up normally and was found limping. Unlike Minni, Naoshaba did not give any hint that she had been sexually tortured in police remand. Perhaps she was too scared to reveal that she had been sexually tortured by police. However, a big section of the population in Bangladesh believed that Naoshaba became a victim of sexual torture by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) during that remand.
People across the world who are living in free democratic societies should come out in support of the oppressed women of Bangladesh.

বাংলাদেশের পুলিশ শুধু নিপীড়কই নয়, দুর্নীতিবাজ এবং পাষণ্ড। এই পুলিশ হেন অপরাধ নেই যা করেনা। জনসমর্থনহীন সরকারের ক্ষমতা টিকিয়ে রাখার জন্য সকল ধরনের দায়মুক্তি পাওয়ায় পুলিশ আরো নিপীড়ক আরো বেপরোয়া হয়ে উঠেছে। পুলিশের কেউ কোন সমালোচনা করলে তার জীবন এরা দুর্বিষহ করে দেয়।
এই খবরটা বাংলাদেশের বাইরে হয়তো অনেকেই জানেন না তাই এটার একটা সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ তুলে ধরছি। বাংলাদেশের বরগুনা জেলায় মিন্নি নামের এই সদ্য বিবাহিতা মহিলা তার স্বামী রিফাতের সাথে যখন কলেজ থেকে ফিরছিলো তখন রিফাতের উপরে মারাত্মক অস্ত্র নিয়ে শাসক দল আওয়ামী লীগের গুণ্ডারা ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে তাকে কুপিয়ে হত্যা করে। এই হত্যাদৃশ্য একাধিক সিসিটিভিতে ধরা পড়ে। সেই ভিডিওগুলোতে দেখা যায় রিফাতের স্ত্রী মিন্নি আক্রমণকারীদের থামানোর চেষ্টা করছে।
হত্যাকারী সকলেই চিহ্নিত হয় কারণ সিসিটিভিতে হত্যাকাণ্ডে অংশ নেয়া সবাইকেই চেনা যাচ্ছিলো। সংবাদপত্রের অনুসন্ধানী রিপোর্টে জানা যায় মাদক ব্যবসার বচসা থেকেই এই হত্যাকাণ্ড ঘটে এবং ওই অঞ্চলের নৈশ ভোটের এমপি ধীরেন্দ্র দেবনাথ শম্ভুর ছেলে সুনাম চন্দ্র দেবনাথের ছত্রছায়ায় এই মাদক ব্যবসা চলে।
এরপরেই শুরু হয় সুনাম চন্দ্র দেবনাথকে বাচানোর চেষ্টা। হত্যা মামলার প্রধান আসামীকে গ্রেফতার করে ক্রসফায়ারে মেরে ফেলা হয়। এরপরে সুনাম দেবনাথের প্রত্যক্ষ তত্ত্বাবধানে নিহত রিফাতের বাবাকে দিয়ে হত্যাকারী হিসেবে রিফাতের স্ত্রী মিন্নিকে দায়ী করা হয়। সোশ্যাল মিডিয়াতে নানা প্রচার চালিয়ে মিন্নির বিরুদ্ধে জনমত তৈরি করা হয় এবং মিন্নিকে গ্রেফতার করে রিমাণ্ডে নেয়া হয়।
আমি সেই সময় ফেইসবুকে লিখেছিলাম বাংলাদেশের পুলিশ এই রিমাণ্ড নামের অকথ্য নির্যাতনে যখন পুরুষদের গুহ্যদ্বারে সেদ্ধ ডিম আর বোতল ঢুকায় তখন তারা মিন্নি নামের এই নারীকে কী করতে পারে সেটা কি আদালত জানেনা? তাও মিন্নিকে কেন রিমাণ্ডে নিয়ে কুৎসিত যৌন নির্যাতন করার সুযোগ দেয়া হল এই পুলিশকে?
আমার সেই অনুমান দুঃখজনকভাবে সত্য হয়েছে, এখন জানা যাচ্ছে।
মিন্নির বাবা মা মিন্নিকে রিমাণ্ড শেষে যখন কারাগারে দেখতে যায়, সেই খবরে পত্রিকায় লেখা হয়েছে, “ দুই কারারক্ষীর সাহায্যে কোনোমতে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা মিন্নিকে দেখে পরিবারের নারী সদস্যরা কেঁদে ফেলেন। পুরুষ সদস্যরা তাঁকে নানা কথা জিজ্ঞেস করেন। কিন্তু ঠিকমতো সোজা হয়ে দাঁড়াতেই পারছিলেন না। এদিক-ওদিক ঢলে পড়ছিলেন। তাঁকে দুই পাশ থেকে ধরে রাখছিলেন দুই নারী কারারক্ষী।
মিন্নি তাঁর বাবাকে শুধু একবারই বলছিলেন, ‘কী নির্যাতন করেছে বুঝে নেও।’”
এটা স্পষ্ট মিন্নিকে যৌন নির্যাতন করা হয়েছে। রিমাণ্ডে নেয়া পুলিশ সদস্যরা তাদের যৌন আকাংখা আর যৌন ফ্যান্টাসি মিন্নির উপরে চরিতার্থ করেছে। এই বাংলাদেশ পুলিশই সেই পাকিস্তানি পুলিশের উত্তরাধিকারী যারা কৃষক নেত্রী ইলা মিত্রের যৌনাঙ্গে গরম সেদ্ধ ডিম ঢুকিয়ে নির্যাতন করেছিলো।
বাংলাদেশে পুলিশের হয়রানির ভয়ে কেউই এই বিষয়ে মুখ খুলবে না। আমি জাতিসংঘ সহ সকল আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার সংস্থা ও নারী সংগঠনের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করছি। আপনারা এই ঘটনার একটি আন্তর্জাতিক তদন্ত করুন।
এর আগেও নিরাপদ সড়ক আন্দোলনে নওশবা নামে এক অভিনেত্রিকে রিমাণ্ডে নিয়ে অসুস্থ বানিয়ে ফেলা হয়েছিলো। যদিও নওশাবা মিন্নির মতো ইশারাতেও কোন যৌন নির্যাতনের অভিযোগ করেনি তবুও বাংলাদেশের একটা বড় অংশের মানুষ মনে করে নওশাবাকেও যৌন নির্যাতন করা হয়েছিলো।
সারা পৃথিবীর মুক্ত গনতান্ত্রিক মানুষেরা বাংলাদেশের নিপীড়িত নারীদের পাশে দাড়ান।
