During the regime of Sheikh Mujib a barbaric pro-government militia was raised in Bangladesh. This militia, which was called Raksheebahinee or security force, was formed with the Chhatra League and Jubo League activists of Mujib Bahinee or Mujib Force who had been trained in India’s Dehradun during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
It’s worth noting that Mujib Bahinee did not fight the war from the front. This slaughterous Raksheebahinee was raised in the way Al Badr had formed with the Jamayet activists in 1971.
Mujib Bahini indulged in all sorts of barbaric crimes, including rape and murder. Let me refer to some incidents that can help the younger generation figure out how exactly the Raksheebahinee members tortured people ruthlessly.
Revolutionary Shanti Sen, who had led the anti-British movement in Shariyatpur and was the founder of Bangladesh Samyabadee Dal, and his son Chanchal Sen were targeted by Raksheebahinee. After the father and son went underground, Raksheebahinee picked up Shanti Sen’s elderly wife and Chanchal’s 19-year-old wife Reena.
Raksheebahinee men beat up and raped Reena in their camp every day. Unable to bear with the torture, Reena requested them to shoot her dead. Then the men said: “Your life is not worth a bullet. We will beat you dead within the next days. Let us enjoy your body the way we like until you drop dead.”
Raksheebahinee also launched a hunt for her sister Sonali. However, one young man called Biplab helped Sonali give the Raksheebahinee the slip. However the members of Raksheebahinee managed to catch Biplab and beat him up badly.
In the presence of his parents, the men forced him to read (Islamic) Kalima. Despite being Hindu, as they ordered, Biplab did sajdah (Islamic prostration), facing the west. The men charged bayonet from his back while he was on sajdah and killed him. While they were charging bayonet, one Raksheebahinee member said: “You have converted to Islam. Now you are bound to be in heaven.”
On February 3, 1974, Raksheebahinee men launched a manhunt for Shanti Sen and Chanchal Sen. They could not find the father and son. They thrashed Shanti Sen’s wife and some other villagers.
Muslims and Hindus in the area were made to stand on two separate rows. A Raksheebahinee commander addressed the Muslim in a speech spewing hatred against the Hindus. He said: “*launs (a derogatory term for the Hindus) are our enemies. We cannot forgive them. All Muslims should break with their Hindu neighbours.”
The history of the barbaric torture by the Raksheebahinee has been erased in the meantime. Although Awami League-raised Raksheebahinee targeted the Hindus ruthlessly, the party is still viewed by many as the saviour of the Hindus today.
It’s the Awami League that founded the communal and ruthless force of Raksheebahinee. Strangely, India and other Western countries view this ruling party of Bangladesh as secular and liberal. This is disappointing.

শেখ মুজিবের শাসনামলে রক্ষীবাহিনী নামে এক ভয়ংকর মিলিশিয়া বাহিনী গড়ে তোলা হয়েছিলো। এই রক্ষী বাহিনী গঠিত হয়েছিলো মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময়ে ভারতের দেরাদুনে প্রশিক্ষিত ছাত্রলীগ ও যুবলীগের কর্মী দিয়ে তৈরি মুলত মুজিব বাহিনীর সদস্যদের দিয়ে।
এই মুজিব বাহিনী মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সম্মুখ সমরে যুদ্ধ করেনি। দলীয় ক্যাডার দিয়ে খুনে এই বাহিনী তৈরি হয় ১৯৭১ এ জামায়াতের কর্মী দিয়ে গড়ে তোলা আল বদরের আদলে। এরা এমন কোন বর্বরতা নেই যা করেনি। আমি কয়েকটি ঘটনা উল্লেখ করছি যেন আজকের তরুণ প্রজন্ম বুঝতে পারে কী নির্মম ভয়ংকর অত্যাচার চালাতো এই রক্ষীবাহিনী।
শরিয়তপুরের বৃটিশ বিরোধী আন্দোলনের অন্যতম পুরোধা, বাংলাদেশ সাম্যবাদী দলের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা বিপ্লবী কমরেড শান্তি সেন ও তার পুত্র চঞ্চল সেনের বিরুদ্ধে রক্ষীবাহিনী অভিযান শুরু করে। শান্তি সেন ও চঞ্চল সেন আত্মগোপনে গেলে রক্ষীবাহিনি শান্তি সেনের বৃদ্ধা স্ত্রী ও রীনা নামে চঞ্চল সেনের ১৯ বছর বয়সী তরুনী স্ত্রী কে গ্রেফতার করে। রীনাকে রক্ষীবাহিনীর ক্যাম্পে প্রত্যেকদিন ধর্ষণ ও মারপিট করা হতো। রীনা অত্যাচার সহ্য করতে না পেরে তাকে গুলি করে মেরে ফেলার অনুনয় করলে রক্ষীরা বলেছিলো, “গুলির দাম আছে, তোকে আমরা সাতদিনেই পিটিয়ে মেরে ফেলবো।” রীনাকে রক্ষীরা বলতো, “মরেই তো যাবে তার আগে আমাদের তোমাকে ভোগ করতে দাও।”
রক্ষীবাহিনী রীণাকে ধরার পর তার বোন সোনালীকে ধরার জন্য হন্যে হয়ে খুঁজতে থাকে। সোনালী টের পেয়ে পালিয়ে যায়। সোনালীকে পালাতে সাহায্য করে বিপ্লব নামের এক ছেলে। রক্ষীবাহিনী এসে বিপ্লবকে প্রথম খুব মারধর করে। তারপর বিপ্লবের মা ও বাবাকে ডাকিয়ে আনা হয়। তাদের সামনেই বিপ্লবকে বলা হয় “কলেমা পড়।” বাধ্য হয়ে বিপ্লব হিন্দু হয়েও কলেমা পড়লো। এরপর বললো, “সেজদা দাও পশ্চিম মুখি হয়ে।” ভয়ে বিপ্লব তাই করলো। যখন সেজদা দিলো, পেছন থেকে বেয়নেট চার্জ করে বাবা-মা ও অনেক লোকের সামনে হত্যা করা হয় বিপ্লবকে। বেয়নেট চার্জ করার সময় রক্ষীদের একজন বললো, “মুসলমান হয়েছো, এবার বেহেস্তে চলে যাও।
৩ ফেব্রুয়ারী ১৯৭৪ শরিয়তপুরে শান্তি সেন ও চলচল সেনের খোজে রক্ষীবাহিনী আসে। শান্তি সেনের স্ত্রীকে সহ গ্রামের লোকদের মারধর করা হয়। এরপরে হিন্দু মুসলমান আলাদা করে লাইন ধরে দাঁড় করানো হয়। মুসলমানদের উদ্দেশ্যে রক্ষীবাহিনীর কম্যাণ্ডার বক্তৃতা শুরু করে বলে, “*লাউনেরা আমাদের দুষমন, তাদের ক্ষমা করা যাবেনা। তোমরা মুসলমানেরা *লাউনদের সাথে থেকো না।”
রক্ষীবাহিনীর ভয়ানক অত্যাচারের ইতিহাস মুছে ফেলা হয়েছে। আওয়ামী লীগের দলীয় কর্মীদের নিয়ে গড়া রক্ষীবাহিনী হিন্দুদের উপর এমন জুলুম করলেও এই পার্টিকে অদ্ভুতভাবে হিন্দুদের ত্রাতা বলা হয়। এমন নির্মম সাম্প্রদায়িক বাহিনীর জন্ম দেয়ার পরও আওয়ামী লীগকে ভারতে এমনকি পশ্চিমা বিশ্বেও সেক্যুলার লিবার্যাল বলে মনে করা হয়। এটা হতাশাজনক।
