DB (Detective Branch) Police of Bangladesh has arrested journalist and human rights activist Abdul Kaium from his town of Mymensingh on Saturday.
Rights activist Kaium happens to be my colleague and a member of Odhikar’s Human Rights Defender Network. Odhikar is a leading human rights organisation in Bangladesh.
After arresting him police have filed a case against Kaium under the draconian Digital Security Act, 2018. The arrest of Kaium and the case against him show how the government threatens and persecutes journalists and human rights activists in Bangladesh.
I urge all international human rights organisations and press freedom rights groups, including Reporters Without Borders, to condemn this action of the Bangladesh government against Kaiyum in the best possible way they can. I hope, international forums will come forward to question Bangladesh government for the arrest and filing of the case against the journalist-activist. And, I demand immediate release of Kaiyum and withdrawal of the harassing case which has been filed against him.

ডিবি পুলিশ সাংবাদিক ও আমার সহকর্মী মানবাধিকার কর্মী অধিকারের Human Rights Defenders’ Network এর সদস্য আব্দুল কাইয়ুমকে শনিবার বিকেলে তার শহর ময়মনসিংহ থেকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে।
গ্রেপ্তারের পরে কাইয়ুমের বিরুদ্ধে Digital Security Act 2018 এ মামলা দায়ের করা হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের সরকার এভাবেই যারা বস্তুনিষ্ঠ সাংবাদিকতার সাথে যুক্ত আছেন তেমন সাংবাদিক ও মানবাধিকার কর্মীদের জীবন দুঃসহ করে তুলেছে।
আমি সকল আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার সংগঠনকে এবং প্রেস ফ্রীডমের জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক রাইটস সংগঠন রিপোর্টারস উইদাউট বর্ডারকে এই গ্রেপ্তার ও মামলার নিন্দা জানিয়ে বিবৃতি দেয়ার আহবান জানাই। সকল আন্তর্জাতিক ফোরামে এই গ্রেপ্তারের বিরুদ্ধে বাংলাদেশ সরকারকে প্রশ্ন করার আহবান জানাই। আব্দুল কাইয়ুমের হয়রানিমুলক মামলা প্রত্যাহারের আহবান জানাই এবং অবিলম্বে তার মুক্তি দাবী করি।
