The registration of human rights organisation Odhikar as a local election observer agency has been cancelled. The organisation cannot function as an election observer agency, Election Commission has informed. The government has also refused to renew the registration of the organisation which means it cannot function as an NGO now. It cannot even collect donation now.
We all know that Odhikar is a leading human rights group in Bangladesh and its work is recognised and admired globally. In 2017, Adilur Rahman Khan, general secretary of Odhikar, received Franco German Human Rights award for his human rights related work. Odhikar played a key role in exposing cases of human rights violation in Bangladesh in recent years. There is no doubt that the organisation is being targeted in a vengeful crackdown for its rights-related activities.
A section of the pro-establishment media has published some baseless slanderous reports against Odhikar in recent weeks. In the accompanying photo two journalists from a pro-government media outlet are found taking the video of the office of Odhikar and the residence of its secretary.
The pro-establishment media outlets launch vengeful vilification attacks on people or groups who do not toe the line of the government. In the process, such media actions help justify further attacks on the targets.
I fear that Odhikar general secretary is likely to face further attacks; he may be tortured in many ways, apart from being sent behind the bars. Odhikar is known for many pioneering human rights work in Bangladesh. International human rights groups should come up in support of Odhikar as the organisation faces a new phase of repression in Bangladesh.

নির্বাচন কমিশন থেকে মানবাধিকার সংগঠন অধিকারের নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষকের রেজিস্ট্রেশন বাতিল করেছে। অধিকারের এনজিও রেজিস্ট্রেশনও নবায়ন করা হয়নি।
আমরা জানি মানবাধিকার সংগঠন গুলোর মধ্যে অধিকারই বাংলাদেশের মানবাধিকার ইস্যুতে প্রশংসনীয় ভূমিকা রাখছে যা দেশের মানবাধিকার কর্মী আর বিদেশের প্রশংসা পেয়েছে। অধিকারের সাধারণ সম্পাদক আদিলুর রহমান শুভ্র ভাইকে ফ্রাংকো জার্মান হিউম্যান রাইটস অ্যাওয়ার্ড দেয়া হয়েছিল ২০১৭ সালে। কিন্তু প্রতিহিংসাবশত এই সংগঠনটির অনুদান নেয়া বন্ধ করে দিয়েছে, রেজিস্ট্রেশন নবায়ন করেনি, নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষকের তালিকা থেকে বাদ দেয়া হয়েছে। এই তুঘলকি কাণ্ড জায়েজ করার জন্য সরকারের দালাল মিডিয়া একের পর এক অবমাননাকর রিপোর্ট করা শুরু করেছে। কয়েকদিন আগে দেখা যায় ফ্যাসিস্ট শাসকের দালাল মিডিয়ার দুই দালাল সাংবাদিক অধিকারের অফিস ও সাধারণ সম্পাদকের বাসার সামনে টিভি ক্যামেরা নিয়ে কিছু রেকর্ড করছে।
যে ব্যক্তি বা সংগঠনকে এই সরকার তার আজ্ঞাবহ নয় বলে চিহ্নিত করে তার উপরে সমস্ত জিঘাংসা নিয়ে এই সরকারের অনুগ্রহপুস্ট দালাল মিডিয়া দিয়ে তার চরিত্রহননের কাজ করে। এরফলে তার উপরে আরো বড় নিপীড়নের বৈধতা পায়।
আমার আশঙ্কা, অধিকারের সাধারণ সম্পাদকের উপরে জেল জুলুম নেমে আসতে পারে।
আমি সকল আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার সংগঠনগুলোকে অধিকারের উপরে চলমান নিগ্রহের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদী হওয়ার আহ্বান জানাই।
