Around the time of Durga Puja we are used to get news of vandalisation of idols of Hindu gods and goddesses in Bangladesh. This is a surprising fact that during the Pakistani period no such vandalisation or desecration of Hindu idols took place here.
In post-independence Bangladesh the first vandalisation of Hindu idols took place in Dhaka, on the second day of the Durga Puja. We won independence through a bloody war. Then we dreamt, our independent Bangladesh would forge ahead with lofty ideals or values. But, it remains unknown how this substandard culture of desecration of Hindu idols crept into the society. Why exactly are some people indulging in such activities in Bangladesh?
Is this hateful violence targeting other religions linked to the animosity-filled root of ultra-nationalistic politics in the country? We do not know what exactly gave rise to such violence. However, this is true that politics which is based ultra-nationalism spreads hatred and teaches its followers to identify people with other opinions as enemies.
There should be protest against the hate crimes involving the desecration of the Hindu idols. But, unless we find out what triggered this anti-Hindu attack in the country soon after the liberation war we can never curb or put an end to this violence.
We dream of establishing an advanced republic. We cannot allow this sub-standard practice go on in our country. We all have to stand united against this heinous culture of vandalising Hindu idols. We have to evolve ways to fight out this problem socially. So, we have to identify the social and political factors which led to the rise of this culture.

দুর্গা পুজার সময় এলেই বাংলাদেশে হিন্দুদের প্রতিমা ভাঙ্গার দুঃখজনক সংবাদ আসতে থাকে।
এটা অবাক করা বিষয় হলেও সত্য, অদ্ভুতভাবে পাকিস্তান আমলে কিন্তু হিন্দুদের কোন প্রতিমা ভাঙ্গার ঘটনা ঘটেনি ।
যুদ্ধোত্তর প্রথম প্রতিমা ভাঙ্গার ঘটনা ঘটে ১৯৭২ সালে খোদ ঢাকা শহরে দুর্গা পুজার দ্বিতীয় দিনে। এক রক্তক্ষয়ী লড়াইয়ের মধ্যে দিয়ে যে স্বাধীন রাষ্ট্রে উন্নত মূল্যবোধ নিয়ে যাত্রা শুরু করার কথা ছিলো সেটা না হয়ে এইধরনেের নিম্নস্তরের সংস্কৃতি কীভাবে দেশে ডানা মেললো সেটা অজানা। ঠিক কী কারণে স্বাধীন দেশে এই ঘটনা ঘটছে তার সমাজতাত্ত্বিক কারণ অনুসন্ধান করতে হবে।
বাঙালি জাতিবাদি রাজনীতির চরম উত্থানের সময়ে পরধর্মের প্রতি এই ধরণের ঘৃনাবাচক হিংসা প্রকাশের মূল কি জাতিবাদি রাজনীতির আভ্যন্তরীণ ঘৃণার উপাদানের সাথে সম্পর্কযুক্ত? আমরা এখনো নিশ্চিত নই। তবে এটা সত্য, এই জাতিবাদি রাজনীতিই তো ঘৃণা শেখায়, ভিন্নমতকে শত্রু ভাবার শিক্ষা তো এখান থেকেই শুরু।
হিন্দুদের প্রতিমা ভাঙ্গার প্রতিবাদ করা অবশ্যই জরুরী, তবে কেন এই সংস্কৃতি শুরু হয়েছিলো সেটা না জানলে আমরা কোন সমাধানের পথে পৌঁছোতে পারবোনা।
হিন্দুদের প্রতিমা ভাঙা, আমাদের ভবিষ্যতের অগ্রসর রিপাবলিক প্রতিষ্ঠার স্বপ্নের সাথে সাংঘর্ষিক।
প্রতিমা ভাঙ্গার এই গর্হিত সংস্কৃতিকে অবশ্যই সবাই মিলে রুখে দিতে হবে। এই সমস্যাকে সামাজিকভাবে মোকাবেলা করার তরিকা উদ্ভাবন করতে হবে। তাই আগে জানতে হবে কোন সামাজিক আর রাজনৈতিক বাস্তবতায় মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ঠিক পরেপরেই এই ঘটনা ঘটতে শুরু করলো।
