A research team led by Prof ABM Faroque, director of Dhaka University’s Biomedical Research Centre, recently conducted two separate series of tests on ten pasteurised milk samples from five top brands in Bangladesh. They have found harmful antibiotics in all of the ten samples.
As soon as the sensational result of Prof Faroque’s test was published in the media, the milk processing companies, with open support from the secretariat of the Ministry of Livestock, targeted him. The ministry is gearing up to take legal action against Prof Farouque.
he secretary of the ministry has charged that Prof Farouque violated the research protocol by revealing the results in the media, without publishing them in any international peer-reviewed journal. So, legal action would be initiated against the professor, the secretary said.
Prof Farouque argued that the findings of his research were in the interest of people and so he did not do anything wrong by publishing them in the media. If the ministry considered his findings unacceptable, it could get the milk samples tested at a WHO-approved laboratory, the professor added.
In this case, the government officials in Bangladesh are supporting the milk sellers, instead of taking the side of the public. These milk companies mixed melamine with baby food for years, before being caught.
The charge against Prof Farouque is indeed ridiculous because it is in fact not mandatory to publish any such research finding in an international peer-reviewed journal, before it is revealed to public.
People of Bangladesh, global academicians, researchers and rights groups should come forward in support of Prof Farouque. The UNICEF and WHO too should stand in support of him. And, the five milk companies should be blacklisted internationally.
Prof Faroque is people’s hero of our time. We feel encouraged and see hope when someone with such strong spine and upright spirit decides to stand up against bad practices this way. His fight also shows that fascism has not succeeded to finish off everything which is good for the nation.
There are some people who like Prof Farouque are carrying on an indestructible fire within them. This fire aims to burn to ashes all which is evil. Prof Farouque, keep this fire burning, do not let it die. People of the entire nation are standing on your side.

ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বায়ো মেডিক্যাল বিভাগের সাবেক প্রধান অধ্যাপক আ ব ম ফারুক বাংলাদেশের ৫টি কোম্পানির ১০টি পাস্তুরিত দুধের নমুনা তিনি ও তাঁর সহকর্মীরা দুই দফায় পরীক্ষা করেছেন। তাতে ১০টি নমুনার ১০টিতেই শরীরের জন্য ক্ষতিকর অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক পাওয়া গেছে বলে অধ্যাপক ফারুক জানিয়েছেন।
এই ফলাফল মিডিয়াতে প্রকাশের পরপরই দুধ প্রক্রিয়াজাত করার কোম্পানীরা বাংলাদেশের প্রাণী সম্পদ মন্ত্রনালয়ের সচিবালয়কে হাত করে অধ্যপক ফারুকের উপরেই চড়াও হয়েছে। অধ্যাপক ফারুকের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা করতে যাচ্ছে এই মন্ত্রনালয়।
মন্ত্রণালয়ের সচিবের অভিযোগ হচ্ছে অধ্যাপক ফারুক কোন পিয়ার রিভিউড জার্নালে না ছাপিয়েই এই নিরীক্ষার ফল প্রকাশ করেছেন এবং তাই তিনি দোষী। অধ্যপক ফারুক বলছেন যেহেতু এই গবেষণার ফলাফল জনগুরুত্বপূর্ণ তাই তিনি তা মিডিয়াতে প্রকাশ করেছেন। এমনকি তিনি এটাও বলেছেন, মন্ত্রণালয়ের উনার গবেষণার ফলাফল গ্রহণীয় মনে না হলে মন্ত্রণালয় বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থা অনুমোদিত গবেষণাগারে নমুনা পরীক্ষা করতে পারে।
বাংলাদেশের পাবলিক কর্মকর্তারা জনগণের পক্ষে না দাঁড়িয়ে অভিযুক্ত দুধ বিক্রেতার পক্ষ নিয়েছে। এই দুধ বিক্রেতারাই শিশু খাদ্যে বছরের পর বছর ধরে মেলামাইন মিশিয়েছিলো।
অধ্যাপক ফারুকের বিরুদ্ধে হাস্যকর এক অভিযোগ উত্থাপন করেছে প্রাণী সম্পদ মন্ত্রনালয়। কোন গবেষণার ফলাফলই প্রকাশের আগে জার্ণালে প্রকাশ করা বাধ্যতামূলক নয়।
বাংলাদেশের জনগণ সহ সারা পৃথিবীর অ্যাকাডেমিশিয়ান, গবেষক এবং মানবাধিকার সংস্থাসমূহকে অধ্যাপক ফারুকের পাশে দাঁড়ানোর জন্য আহ্বান জানাই। আমি ইউনিসেফ ও বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থাকে আহ্বান জানাই যেন অধ্যাপক ফারুককে সুরক্ষা দেন। অভিযুক্ত দুধ কোম্পানীগুলোকে আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে কালো তালিকাভুক্ত করারও আহ্বান জানাই।
অধ্যপক ফারুক, আমাদের সময়ের গণনায়ক। এমন ইস্পাতদৃঢ় মেরুদণ্ড নিয়ে কাউকে দাঁড়াতে দেখলে আবার লড়াইয়ের সাহস খুঁজে পাই। মনে হয় বাংলাদেশের সব কিছু ফ্যাসিবাদ শেষ করে দিতে পারেনি। অধ্যাপক ফারুকের মতো কেউ কেউ বুকের ভেতরে এক অবিনাশী আগুন বয়ে বেড়ায়।
