Veteran politician BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, who happened to be a liberation war fighter, was badly injured in an attack by Awami League goons. He was on an election campaign near Dhaka when he was attacked yesterday. The BNP leader and 20 or 25 of his party colleagues were left injured following the violent attack. They hit Mr Roy on his head. In bloodied and battered condition he was locked up in a shop by his supporters to save him from further attacks. Later when some journalists reached the spot he was rescued and taken to hospital.
Police are ganging up with the Awami League goons and launching violent attacks on the opposition party leaders and workers. We have seen in video clips how the ruling party hoodlums attacked many opposition campaigns in the presence of police. Police took no action against those attackers.
Every day the opposition Oikya Front candidates, leaders and workers are being attacked across the country. Strangely, it’s the opposition leaders and activists who are being arrested on fictitious charges of violence and subversive activities. Oikya Front is taking part in a general election in such hostile situation. Oikya Front leaders filed several complaints to the Election Commission. But, no relief came underway.
Weeks ago, Oikya Front voiced concerns that it would be a sham election if it is conducted while Awami League is in power. So, it demanded the election be held by a neutral caretaker government. Awami League promised that it would hold the election properly. Now, it’s up to the international community to judge if it is going to witness a “free, fair and all-inclusive” election in Bangladesh

প্রবীণ রাজনীতিবিদ বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধা বিএনপি নেতা গয়েশ্বর চন্দ্র রায়ের উপরে আওয়ামী লীগের গুণ্ডারা হামলা করে তাকে মারাত্মকভাবে জখম করেছে।
ঢাকার অদুরে কেরানীগঞ্জের চুনকটিয়া এলাকায় নির্বাচনী প্রচারণা শেষে নেতাকর্মীদের নিয়ে কদমতলী যাচ্ছিলেন গয়েশ্বর রায়। পথে পরিচর্যা হাসপাতালের সামনে পৌঁছালে পেছন থেকে তাদের ওপর হামলা করা হয়। এতে গয়েশ্বর রায়সহ তাঁর দলের ২০-২৫ জন আহত হন। গয়েশ্বরের মাথায় আঘাত করা হয়েছে। তখন রক্তাক্ত অবস্থায় একটি দোকানে অনেক সময় অবরুদ্ধ ছিলেন তিনি। পরে সাংবাদিকরা খবর পেয়ে ঘটনাস্থলে গেলে হামলাকারীরা চলে যায় এবং গয়েশ্বরকে উদ্ধার করা হয়।
বিরোধী নেতাকর্মীদের উপরে একইসাথে পুলিস ও আওয়ামী লীগের গুণ্ডারা আক্রমণ করছে। পুলিসের উপস্থিতিতেই অনেক আক্রমণ হয়েছে। পুলিস কোন আক্রমণকারীকেই গ্রেপ্তার করেনি।
প্রতিদিন ঐক্য ফ্রন্টের নেতাকর্মীরাই শুধু নয় প্রার্থীরাও মারাত্মকভাবে আক্রান্ত হচ্ছে। তাদের মেরে এভাবেই রক্তাক্ত করা হচ্ছে। আবার আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে প্রতিদিন অসংখ্য ঐক্য ফ্রন্টের নেতা কর্মীদের সহিংসতার অভিযোগে গ্রেপ্তার করা হচ্ছে। গ্রেপ্তার করে যেই মামলা দেয়া হচ্ছে তার বেশীরভাগই ভুয়া মামলা। এমন এক বৈরি পরিবেশের মধ্যে ঐক্য ফ্রন্টকে নির্বাচন করতে হচ্ছে। প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনারের কাছে অভিযোগ জানিয়েও কোন প্রতিকার পাওয়া যাচ্ছেনা।
আওয়ামী লীগের অধীনে নির্বাচন করলে নির্বাচন নামের এই তামাশা হবে বলেই ঐক্য ফ্রন্ট নিরপেক্ষ সরকারের অধীনে নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের দাবী তুলেছিলো। আওয়ামী লীগ প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলো তারা একটি অবাধ ও নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন উপহার দেবে। বিশ্ববাসী দেখুক কেমন ধরণের অবাধ ও নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন তারা উপহার দিচ্ছে।
