“Khaleda (Zia) helped (former Bangladesh President Hussain Muhammad) Ershad come into power,” Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s prime minister said in the parliament. This is an outright lie in broad daylight. Awami League has a tradition of spreading falsehoods.
Let us take a look at the history to find out the truth.
When Ershad came into power Khaleda Zia was not into politics at all. She was none except being the distraught wife of a just-assassinated President. On the other hand, when Ershad managed to overthrow the BNP-led government Hasina said: “I am not unhappy.”
There is another proof which shows that Awami League supported grabbing of power by Ershad. Awami League mouthpiece “Dainik Banglar Banee” published an editorial openly supporting his move towards power.
In 1986, Awami League went against a political compromise, struck a deal with Ershad and participated in general election taking along eight political parties. BNP did not make any such political move. The move by Awami League helped legitimise and elongate Ershad’s rule in Bangladesh.
In 1991, Ershad was sent to jail, as soon as BNP formed the government. But, after Awami League took to power in 1996, within six months, the government released Ershad from jail. It made amply clear how Awami League all along stood by Ershad.
We also remember that in 1996 Awami League formed the government with support from Ershad. And that political alliance which the currently ruling Awami League formed in 2006, is still alive.

নৈশ ভোটের সংসদে শেখ হাসিনা বলেছেন, “এরশাদকে ক্ষমতা দখলের সুযোগ করে দেন খালেদা”
এই কথাটা সবৈর্ব মিথ্যা। মিথ্যাচার আওয়ামী লীগের প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্য।
আসুন আমরা ইতিহাস থেকে আসল ঘটনা জেনে নেই।
এরশাদ যখন ক্ষমতা দখল করে তখন খালেদা জিয়া রাজনীতিতে আসেননি, তিনি তখন নিহত রাষ্ট্রপতির শোকাতুর বিধবা স্ত্রীর বেশী কিছু নন। বরং এরশাদ ১৯৮২ সালে যখন বিএনপি সরকারকে উৎখাত করে ক্ষমতা দখল করলে, শেখ হাসিনা বলেছিল, ‘আই এম নট আনহ্যাপি’- ‘আমি অখুশী নই’।
আওয়ামী লীগ যে সাংগঠনিক ভাবে এরশাদের ক্ষমতা দখলকে সমর্থন করেছিলো তার প্রমাণ হচ্ছে, তখন আওয়ামীলীগের মুখপাত্র ‘দৈনিক বাংলার বাণী’ এরশাদের ক্ষমতা দখলকে সমর্থন করে সম্পাদকীয় ছেপেছিলো ।
এই আওয়ামী লীগই রাজনৈতিক সমঝোতা ভেঙে ৮৬-তে এরশাদের সাথে সমঝোতা করে নির্বাচনে আট দলকে সাথে নিয়ে অংশ নিয়েছিল; বিএনপি নয়। এর ফলে এরশাদের শাসন বৈধতা পায় এবং স্বৈরাচার দীর্ঘায়িত হয়।
আওয়ামী লীগের সাথে এরশাদের বিশেষ সম্পর্কের বিষয়টা বুঝা যায় যখন বিএনপি ক্ষমতায় এসে ৯১-তে এরশাদকে জেলে ঢোকায়, ৯৬ -তে আওয়ামী লীগ ক্ষমতায় এসে ৬ মাসের মধ্যেই এরশাদকে মুক্তি দেয় এই দুই ঘটনায়।
শুধু তাই নয় ৯৬-তে এরশাদের সমর্থন নিয়ে আওয়ামীলীগই সরকার গঠন করেছিল এবং এরশাদের সাথে ২০০৬ সালে আওয়ামীলীগ যে জোট গঠন করেছিল, তা এখনও চলছে।
