Few days ago it was reported across the social media that “a big cache of country-made arms” had been recovered from the local office of International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Cox’s Bazar and they were to be handed over to the Rohingya refugees.
The IOM has issued a statement saying that the materials which were initially confiscated as arms from the office of one local NGO were nothing but tools for day-to-day use in farming and other livelihood related activities. A local NGO, after it received them from the IMO, was preparing to distribute them among local Bangladeshi people, not for the Rohingya refugees, the IMO statement said. The local administration returned the tools to the NGO as soon as it knew that they were not arms, but tools for farming and other work.
A sizeable section of the media in Bangladesh is resorting to propaganda to trigger an animosity against the Rohingya refugees. It is publishing several Rohingya-related reports without cross-checking the related facts. Many of these reports show the refugees in poor light.
We should stand against such racist hate campaign against the poor Rohingya refugees.

আন্তর্জাতিক অভিবাসন সংস্থা বলছে, কক্সবাজারে রোহিঙ্গা ক্যাম্প-এ দেশীয় অস্ত্র উদ্ধারের যে খবর সোশ্যাল মিডিয়ায় প্রচার হয়েছে, তা ভুল ভাবে উপস্থাপিত হয়েছে। মোটেও রোহিঙ্গাদের জন্য নয়, বরং স্থানীয় মানুষদের কৃষি কাজ সহ নানা দৈনন্দিন কাজের জন্য দেওয়ার জন্য ওই সব দা, করাত বানানো হয়েছিল। ভুল ভাঙার পরে, জব্দ করা উপকরণগুলো প্রশাসন ফেরত দিয়েছে বলেও বিবৃতিতে জানিয়েছে সংস্থাটি।
মিডিয়ার একটি বড় অংশ রোহিঙ্গা সংশ্লিষ্ট যে কোনো খবর কোন প্রকার সত্যতা যাচাই করা ছাড়াই অতিরঞ্জিত করে প্রকাশ ও প্রচার করছে। এতে জনমনে ভীতি ও রোহিঙ্গাবিদ্বেষ তৈরি হচ্ছে।
