I did not see this video before. Perhaps I did not want to see it before because I could not tolerate the level of cruelty displayed here. A few days I had to watch this video for some reason. Perhaps it would have been better if I did not watch it. Most probably the video was shot on May 5 in 2013. It is surprising to find that the policemen are taking turns beating the boy ruthlessly while he is lying motionless- perhaps fatally injured, if already not dead. Seething in vengeance, the men are using their full force to beat him with the sticks as if he is their personal enemy. At one point, blood streams out from the bottom of his head. The scene is macabre.
It is hard for me to believe that this incident took place in Bangladesh, my motherland. I feel bad to think that money from the taxpayers, including me, is used to pay the salary of these policemen. Unless they come under attack, police do not use their force or turn violent elsewhere in the world. I am sure the boy who is lying motionless on the ground posed no threat to the police at all. Why did the police beat him in that cruel style then?
Let’s not forget that police in Bangladesh bashed up internationally acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam leaving him bloodied. They even forced him to wash his blood-stained clothing. Later, he put on the same clothing while appearing in the court. People in Bangladesh are too afraid to talk about such police atrocities and other issues related to torture and oppression.
Recently, we saw how French police in Paris refused to cane the Yellow Vest demonstrators and took off their own helmets and vests. In Bangladesh police keep on violating human rights in violent style, perhaps for the reason that nobody holds them accountable for such acts.
This state of Bangladesh is very sick. We saw a grave symptom of this state’s sickness on the day of the so-called general election on December 30 and the previous night. We have to work hard and help in the mending of this state. Otherwise, this nation cannot progress any more.

আমি এই দৃশ্যের ভিডিও আগে দেখিনি, হয়তো নির্মমতা সহ্য করতে পারিনি, সেজন্যই জন্যই দেখতে চাইনি।
কিন্তু কয়েকদিন আগে ভিডিওটা আমাকে দেখতেই হলো। না দেখতে হলে হয়তো ভালো হতো। দৃশ্যটা খুব সম্ভবতঃ ৫ মে ২০১৩ র। আমরা বিস্মিত হয়ে লক্ষ্য করি ছেলেটি আহত হয়ে অথবা নিহত হয়ে রাস্তায় পড়ে আছে। কিন্তু নিশ্চল সেই দেহের উপরে একের পর এক পুলিশ এসে বীভৎসভাবে পিটিয়ে চলছে। একজনকে সরিয়ে আরেকজন পিটাচ্ছে, শরীরের সব শক্তি দিয়ে পিটাচ্ছে। যেন এই নিশ্চল দেহটার সাথে তাদের ব্যক্তিগত কোন একান্ত শত্রুতা আছে। একসময় ছেলেটির মাথার নিচ দিয়ে তপ্ত রক্তের স্রোতধারা বেরিয়ে আসছে। কি বীভৎস আর নির্মম দৃশ্য!
আমার ভাবতে কষ্ট হচ্ছে এই দৃশ্য বাংলাদেশের, আমার জন্মভুমির। আমার ভাবতে কষ্ট হচ্ছে আমার ট্যাক্সের পয়সায় এই পুলিশদের বেতন হয়। পৃথিবীতে কোন জায়গায় আক্রান্ত না হলে পুলিশ শক্তি প্রয়োগ করেনা। এই ছেলেটা পুলিশের জন্য কোন ধরনের ঝুঁকি তৈরি করেছিলো যে নিশ্চল দেহকে লাইন ধরে এমন বীভৎসভাবে পিটাতে হবে?
এই পুলিসই শহিদুল আলমের মতো একজন শ্রদ্ধেয় সিনিয়র ফোটোগ্রাফারকে মিডিয়াতে সরকারের সমালোচনা করার জন্য গ্রেফতার করে তাদের জিম্মায় পিটিয়ে রক্তাক্ত করেছে । তারপর সেই রক্তমাখা জামা তাঁর হাতেই ধুইয়ে সেই জামা পরিয়েই তাঁকে আদালতে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের মানুষেরা সেকারণেই এসব নিয়ে কথা বলতে ভয় পায়।
অথচ কিছুদিন আগেই প্যারিসে ইয়োলো ভেস্ট আন্দোলনকারীদের উপরে লাঠি চার্জ করতে অস্বীকৃতি জানিয়ে ফ্রান্সের পুলিসেরা নিজেরাই নিজেদের ভেস্ট আর হেলমেট খুলে ফেলেছিলো। যে রাষ্ট্রে রাষ্ট্রীয় বাহিনী এমন নির্মমতা করেও জবাবদিহিতার বাইরে থাকতে পারে সেই রাষ্ট্রের গভীর অসুখ আছে। সেই অসুখ এখন আমাদের সামনে নিয়তই প্রকটিত হচ্ছে। এই অসুখের একটা প্রকাশ ছিলো ৩০ ডিসেম্বরের তথাকথিত নির্বাচনের দিন এবং আগের দিন রাতে।
এই রাষ্ট্রের বড় ধরনের মেরামত ছাড়া আমাদের সামনে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার কোন উপায় নেই।
