British Labour Party MP Tulip Siddiq, who happens to be the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s sister’s daughter, misbehaved with a journalist in Britain and she is likely to face harsh criticism for this. There are three issues for which she will be targeted now.

1. In the past, she was found to be directly involved in the election campaign of Awami League. She introduced herself as a spokesperson of the party and was even found celebrating the party’s victory. But, now she is telling a British journalist that she has nothing to do with Bangladesh’s serious human rights issue like rising cases of enforced disappearances because she is not Bangladeshi and happens to be a “British” MP.
2. She was officially informed several times about the case of disappearance of barrister Ahmed Bin Quasem. But she claimed that she knew nothing of that sensational disappearance.
3. In an aggressive tone she shouted “very careful” at a pregnant British news producer. To the producer she also made another impertinent remark: “Hope you have a great birth because child labour is hard.”

Tulip is likely to be criticized by the media and other members of her Labour Party for her shift to the new vague stand on the issue of human rights.

In Hampstead and Kilburn, from where Tulip got elected, many Bangladeshi British citizens are likely to be angry with her over the issue. To teach her a lesson, a good number of her supporters may unite in a decision to switch their allegiance to another politician, threatening her political career.

Let us see how the British politics and the citizens of the country react to the situation now.

বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বোনের মেয়ে ব্রিটিশ লেবার দল থেকে মনোনীত এম পি টিউলিপ সিদ্দিক ইংল্যান্ডে সাংবাদিকের সাথে তার সাম্প্রতিক অসৌজন্যমুলক আচরণের জন্য তার দেশেই দারুণভাবে সমালোচিত হতে পারেন। যে তিনটি বিষয় সামনে আসবে বলে আমার অনুমান, তা হচ্ছে;

১. অতীতে আওয়ামী লীগের নির্বাচনী ক্যাম্পেইনে তার প্রত্যক্ষ সম্পৃক্ততা ও প্রকাশ্যে বিজয় উদযাপন, এমনকি নিজেকে আওয়ামীলীগের মুখপাত্র দাবী করা সত্ত্বেও ‘ব্রিটিশ এমপি’ হওয়ার অজুহাত দেখিয়ে বাংলাদেশের গুরুতর মানবাধিকার বিষয়ে হস্তক্ষেপে অপারগতা প্রকাশ।

২. ব্যারিষ্টার আহমদ বিন কাশিমের পরিবারের পক্ষ থেকে ও তার আইনজীবীর পক্ষ থেকে একাধিক বার বাংলাদেশ সরকার কর্তৃক তার গুম হওয়ার বিষয়ে পত্র পাওয়ার পরও বিষয়টি নিয়ে সাংবাদিকের প্রশ্নের মুখে ‘অজ্ঞতা’ প্রকাশ করা।

৩. প্রশ্নকারী ব্রিটিশ সংবাদ মাধ্যমের অন্তঃসত্ত্বা নারী প্রযোজককে উদ্দেশ্য করে ‘সাবধান হয়ে যাও’ বলে হুমকি দেওয়া ও ‘সন্তান জন্মদান বড়ই কষ্টের’ বলে তাকে তাচ্ছিল্য সুচক মন্তব্য করা।

এছাড়াও, মানবাধিকার বিষয়ে তার পূর্বেকার ‘সার্বজনীন’ অবস্থান কে ‘দ্বৈত নীতি’র পর্যায়ে অবনমিত করার কারণে তার নিজের দল লেবার পার্টির সহকর্মীদের কাছ থেকে ও গণমাধ্যমে টিউলিপ সমালোচিত হতে পারেন।

তবে, তার নির্বাচনী এলাকায় বসবাসকারী বাংলাদেশী বৃটিশ নাগরিকদের তার কোন রাজনৈতিক প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী টিউলিপের বিরুদ্ধে ঐক্যবদ্ধ করতে পারলে, তার রাজনৈতিক ক্যারিয়ার কতটা দীর্ঘস্থায়ী হবে, সেটাও একটা বড় প্রশ্ন।

দেখা যাক বৃটিশ রাজনীতি এবং সেই দেশের জনগণ এই ঘটনায় কীভাবে প্রতিক্রয়া দেখায়।
