There’s no issue in it if you have fun and frolicking during a festival. But, it triggers a problem when you keep a political agenda hidden behind the festival and use motifs of certain religion during the celebration and seek to pass it as a festival for all.
India’s The Telegraph newspaper has carried a feature on the political significance of the New Year celebration in Bangladesh. In the feature Sheikh Hasina has been quoted as saying that any party which aims to destroy the culture and heritage of the country should not be allowed to rule Bangladesh. And, she has identified BNP as a party supporting the heritage and culture of the country. BNP sought to stand against the celebration of Bengali New Year 25 years ago, she added.
This is clear from the statement of the PM that the New Year celebration indeed carries a political significance in Bangladesh. This is the point most Bangladeshis are disagreeing with the PM. They are opposing such politically motivated celebration of the New Year because in its current form the celebration goes against the history, belief and culture of the majority in the society.
Among the Bengali people the celebration of the New Year was not a tradition at all. The celebration of the first day of the year carried no significance in their culture. In the West, the concept of time is like that of a straight line. But in Bengal this concept was like that of a circle- it starts at the point where it ends. So, the last day of the year is more important in Bengal. Celebration of the last day of the Bengali calendar’s last month of Choitro is part of the tradition in Bengal.
The middle class Bengali- who were born in the womb of the British colony- began celebrating the Bengali New Year, following the culture of the English New Year celebration. However, now this Bengali New Year celebration has turned into a cultural expression of an oppressive rule.

উৎসব আর আনন্দ করা নিয়ে কারো কোন সমস্যা নেই। সমস্যা হচ্ছে, উৎসবকে ঘিরে রাজনৈতিক এজেন্ডা থাকায়, উৎসবের সাম্প্রদায়িক ও ধর্মগন্ধি উপাচারকে সার্বজনীন বলে দাবী করে সবার উপরে চাপিয়ে দেয়ায়।
ভারতের টেলিগ্রাফ পত্রিকায় বাংলাদেশের পহেলা বৈশাখ পালনের রাজনৈতিক তাৎপর্য কী সেটা নিয়ে একটা ফিচার ছাপা হয়েছে। সেখানে শেখ হাসিনার বরাত দিয়ে বলা হচ্ছে, যারা বাংলাদেশের ঐতিহ্য ও সংস্কৃতিকে ধংস করতে চায় তারা যেন ক্ষমতায় না আসতে পারে। এবং তিনি বিএনপিকে আমাদের ঐতিহ্য আর সংস্কৃতির বিরুদ্ধ শক্তি হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করেছেন।
এটাও দাবী করা হয়েছে ২৫ বছর আগে পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপনের পদ্ধতিকে বিএনপির তরফ থেকে লাইনচ্যুত করার চেষ্টা করা হয়েছিল।
প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বক্তব্যে এটা পরিস্কার যে পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপনের বিশেষ ধরনের একটা রাজনৈতিক তাৎপর্য আছে। এইখানেই বাংলাদেশের অধিকাংশ মানুষের আপত্তি।
সমাজের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠের বিশ্বাস, ইতিহাস, ঐতিহ্য বা সংস্কৃতির বিপরীতে বাংলা নববর্ষকে দাঁড় করানো হয়েছে বলে তার বিরোধিতা করা ছাড়া বাঙালির আর কোন গত্যন্তর থাকে না।
পহেলা বৈশাখ বাঙালীর ঐতিহ্য ছিলনা। বাংলাভাষীদের জন্য বছরের প্রথম দিন আলাদাভাবে পালনের কোন তাৎপর্য নেই। পশ্চিমে কাল বা সময়ের ধারণা সরলরৈখিক। যা একবার যায় তা ফিরে আসেনা। বাংলায় কালের ধারণা চক্রাকার, যা শেষ সেটাই শুরু। বাংলার সময় ফিরে ফিরে আসে ঋতুচক্রের মতো। বাংলায় সেইজন্য বছরের শেষ দিন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
চৈত্র সংক্রান্তি পালন ছিল বাংলার ঐতিহ্য। বৃটিশ উপনিবেশের গর্ভে জন্ম নেয়া বাঙালী মধ্যবিত্ত ইংরেজি নববর্ষের মতো করে হ্যাপি নিউ ইয়ার বলার উপলক্ষ খুঁজে নেয়ার জন্য বাংলা নববর্ষ পালন শুরু করে। আর বর্তমানকালে তা হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে একটা দমনমুলক শাসনের সাংস্কৃতিক এক্সপ্রেশন। এর বিরুদ্ধে পলিটিক্যাল প্রতিরোধ অনিবার্য।
