All round the year we hear allegations of vandalisation of idols of Hindu gods and goddesses in Bangladesh. During the season of Durga Puja the rate of vandalisation of the idols increases to a good extent. Newspapers and Face book pages become awash with condemnations and protests from different corners. But, we never see any serious discussions on why such vandalisations take place or who the perpetrators behind such acts are. None tried to investigate why no desecration of any Hindu idol had taken place in Islamic East Pakistan and why the idol of goddess Durga was vandalised right in the middle of Dhaka just after secular Bangladesh was born.

I never say that Hindus do not face any discrimination in Bangladesh. The root of the discrimination lies in the Constitution of the country. This is also true that there are uneducated, stupid, fanatical Hindus as well as Muslims who hate people just because they belong to another faith.

The Hindu community in Bangladesh has historically worked as a vote bank for the fascist ruling Awami League party. In return, Awami League has empowered the Hindu community. A few weeks ago, in an interview with the Telegraph newspaper of India pro-Awami League intellectual and activist Shahriar Kabir said, Hindus have turned around in Bangladesh with Hasina coming to power.

From this interview, it became clear that the Indian fascist right-wing Hindu group RSS is active across Bangladesh and it is actively trying to make this Hindus in Bangladesh as a powerful political power.

Perhaps, in a slip of the tongue, Kabir said something very important about the condition of the Hindus in Bangladesh. On how the Hindus are being empowered in Bangladesh, he said that they “are being given more concrete opportunities in the job market, especially in the sectors of administration and education.”

Nirmal Kumar Chatterjee, general secretary of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (BPUP) said earlier this month that this year, across the country, the Durga Puja was being celebrated at over 31,398 pavilions, up from 30,077 pavilions in 2017 and 30,915 last year.

The number pavilions of Durga Pujas in Bangladesh are increasing every year. BPUP and Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad (HBCOP) insist that more pavilions of the Pujas are coming up every year with Hindus feeling more secure in the country. Number of vandalisation of the Hindu idols is on the decrease and compared to the total number of Puja pavilions in the country, the figure is negligibly small, the minority groups reported.

During the preparation of Durga Puja this year 13 idols were vandalised in 11 districts, BPUP accused, while expressing concerns over the incidents.

In an interview with Deutsche Welle, published on September 28, HBCOP leader Rana Dasgupta claimed that Durga idols had been vandalised at “12 to 15 places” in Bangladesh until the fourth week of September this year. Why does Dasgupta present the figure as “12 to 15” in the case of such sensitive issue like vandalisation of Hindu idols? It means he is not sure how many idols were vandalised exactly. The figure, in this case, is an indicator of torture on Hindus in Bangladesh, Hindus claim. Is it not very surprising that Dasgupta failed to quote the exact number of vandalisation of the idols?

Two days after Dasgupta’s interview was published by Deutsche Welle, Chatterjee of BPUP told BBC that last year 18 cases of vandalisation of Durga idols took place in Bangladesh last year and in 2019, the idols were vandalised at 13 places.

Let us list up how many cases of vandalisation of Durga idols took place in Bangladesh in September and October, until the celebration of the Puja.

So, seven cases of vandalisation were reported in the media this year. Months before the celebration of Durga Puja this year two cases of vandalisation of the idol took place in Chandpur and Brahmanbaria. If these two cases are added, the total number of idol vandalisation comes to nine, not thirteen. However, not even one such case of vandalisation should take place in any country. We should do our best to put a complete halt to such incidents.

Inquiries revealed that existing land-related disputes had led to the vandalisation of the idols in most cases. In one case some miscreants vandalised the idol in the dark of the night after they harassed a woman and faced public protest for the act. In another case the miscreants vandalised the idol after the concerned puja committee refused to pay for their beer party.

All democratic institutions and the rule of the law have disappeared in the country after the fascist rule has been in place for eleven years. Torture cells have come up inside the universities. People are disappearing inside illegal private detention centres run by the law enforcement agencies that are indulging in the rampant level of human rights abuses. Jubaleague, the youth wing of Awami League, is running torture cells for those opposing the views of the ruling party. The state and security agencies were blatantly used by the government to massively rig the last general elections in favour of Awami League. In such state of anarchy the hooligans have taken control of the entire social system of the country.

No religious rivalry is behind the vandalisation of the idols, it is clear. It should be viewed as cases of persecution of the weak by the more powerful miscreants. It is completely incorrect if someone seeks to portray these vandalisation as attacks on the Hindus by the devout Muslims.

Unless we succeed to overthrow this fascist rule in Bangladesh and build a modern republic, we will not be able to bring a halt to the vandalisation of the idols in the country. The Hindus of Bangladesh have to come forward first not to let their community be used as a vote bank for the fascist rulers.

দুর্গা প্রতিমা ভাঙাঃ একটি ক্রিটিক্যাল অনুসন্ধান

বছরে সারা সময় ধরেই এমন অভিযোগ শুনে আসছি যে হিন্দুদের পুজার প্রতিমা ভাঙা হচ্ছে। দুর্গা পূজা এলেই এই প্রতিমা ভাঙা ঘটনাগুলো একটা নতুন মাত্রা পায়। পত্রিকার পাতা জুড়ে ফেইসবুকের নিউজফিড জুড়ে নিন্দা আর প্রতিবাদের ঝড় উঠে। কিন্তু ঠিক কেন এই প্রতিমা ভাঙার ঘটনাগুলো ঘটে বা কারা ঘটায় এই বিষয় সব নিয়ে কোন সিরিয়াস আলোচনা হয়না।

ঠিক কোন কারণে কথিত সাম্প্রদায়িক পাকিস্তান রাষ্ট্রে কোন প্রতিমা ভাঙার ঘটনা ঘটেনি এবং ঠিক কোন কারণে অসাম্প্রদায়িক বাংলাদেশের রক্তাক্ত অভ্যুদয়ের এক বছরের কম সময়ের মধ্যেই খোদ ঢাকাতে প্রথমবারের মতো প্রতিমা ভাঙার ঘটনা ঘটলো, তার অনুসন্ধান কেউ করেনি।

আমি কখনোই বলিনা যে বাংলাদেশের হিন্দুরা কোন বৈষম্যমূলক আচরণের শিকার হয়না। বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্র এমন সংবিধান রচনা করেছে যে বৈষম্যের বীজ এই সংবিধানেই লুক্কায়িত আছে। এটাও সত্য হিন্দু মুসলমান উভয় সম্প্রদায়ের মধ্যে অশিক্ষিত, মূর্খ, ধর্মান্ধ, উগ্র পরধর্ম বিদ্বেষীরা আছে। এবং এরা সকল পরিস্থিতিতে পরধর্মের বিষয়ে ঘৃণা উৎপাদনে পারঙ্গম।

বাংলাদেশের হিন্দু সম্প্রদায় ঐতিহাসিকভাবে বর্তমান ফ্যাসিস্ট শাসক আওয়ামী লীগের ভোট ব্যাংক হিসেবে কাজ করে এসেছে। এর প্রতিদানে হিসেবে আওয়ামী লীগ বাংলাদেশে হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়কে শক্তিশালী করেছে। কয়েকদিন আগে আওয়ামী বুদ্ধিজীবী ও অ্যাকটিভিস্ট শাহরিয়ার কবীর ইন্ডিয়ার টেলিগ্রাফ খবরের কাগজে একটা সাক্ষাতকারে বলেছেন, হাসিনার ক্ষমতারোহণের ফলে বাংলাদেশের হিন্দুরা ঘুরে দাঁড়িয়েছে।

এই সাক্ষাতকারের সূত্রে জানা গেলো বাংলাদেশে ফ্যাসিস্ট হিন্দুত্ববাদী সংগঠন আর এস এস বাংলাদেশের হিন্দুদের একটি শক্তিশালী রাজনৈতিক শক্তিতে রূপান্তরিত করার জন্য সক্রিয়ভাবে কাজ করছে।

শাহরিয়ার কবীর মুখ ফস্কিয়ে বাংলাদশে হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়ের অবস্থা সম্পর্কে একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কথা বলে ফেলেছেন। হাসিনা কীভাবে হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়কে শক্তিশালী করছেন, সেই প্রসঙ্গে তিনি বলেছেন, হাসিনার আমলে হিন্দুদের জন্য কনক্রিট জব অপারচুনিটি দেয়া হয়েছে বিশেষ করে শিক্ষা ও প্রশাসনে।

বাংলাদেশ পূজা উদযাপন পরিষদের সাধারণ সম্পাদক নির্মল চ্যাটার্জি বলেছেন ২০১৯ সালে ৩১ হাজার ৩৯৮টি পূজামণ্ডপে দুর্গোৎসব অনুষ্ঠিত হচ্ছে, যা গত বছরের চেয়ে ৪৮৩টি বেশি, ২০১৭ সালে বাংলাদেশে পূজা মন্ডপের সংখ্যা ছিল ৩০ হাজার ৭৭টি। (কালের কণ্ঠ, 3 অক্টোবর, 2019)

প্রত্যেক বছর দুর্গা মণ্ডপের সংখ্যা বাড়ছে। বাংলাদেশ পূজা উদযাপন পরিষদ ও হিন্দু বৌদ্ধ খ্রিস্টান ঐক্য পরিষদ দাবী করেছে, হিন্দুরা অধিকতর নিরাপত্তা পাওয়ায় পূজার সংখ্যা প্রত্যেক বছর বাড়ছে, প্রতিমা ভাঙার সংখ্যা কমেছে এবং মোট অনুষ্ঠিত পূজার চাইতে প্রতিমা ভাঙার এই ঘটনাগুলোর সংখ্যা নগণ্য।

এবার আসুন দেখি প্রতিমা ভাঙার যে অভিযোগগুলো আসছে তার মধ্যে পরিসংখ্যানগত সমস্যার কারণে কী কী বিশ্বাসযোগ্যতার সমস্যা আছে।

এই বছর বাংলাদেশে দুর্গাপূজার প্রস্তুতিতে ১১টি জেলায় ১৩টি মন্দিরে প্রতিমা ভাঙচুর করা হয়েছে বলে অভিযোগ তুলে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছে পূজা উদযাপন পরিষদ।

ডয়েচে ভেলেতে ২৮ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১৯ হিন্দু বৌদ্ধ খ্রিষ্টান ঐক্য পরিষদের রানা দাশগুপ্ত দাবী করেছেন, সেই পর্যন্ত ১২ থেকে ১৫টি জায়গায় প্রতিমা ভাঙচুর হয়েছে৷ ‘১২ থেকে ১৫’- এটা কোন পরিসংখ্যান হতে পারে? তার মানে রানা দাশগুপ্ত নিশ্চিত নন ঠিক কয়টা জায়গায় প্রতিমা ভাঙা হয়েছে। যেই ঘটনাকে উনারা হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়ের উপরে নির্যাতনের সূচক হিসেবে দাবী করেন সেই সংখ্যা তিনি নিশ্চিতভাবে বলতে পারবেন না? বিষয়টা কৌতুহল উদ্দীপক নয় কী?

আবার তার দুইদিন পরে ১ অক্টোবর ২০১৯ বিবিসিকে দেয়া সাক্ষাতকারে বাংলাদেশ পূজা উদযাপন পরিষদের নির্মল কুমার চ্যাটার্জি বলেছেন, গত বছর মানে ২০১৮ সালে ১৮টি প্রতিমা ভাঙচুর করা হয়েছিলো এবং এবছর অর্থাৎ ২০১৯ সালে ১৩টি প্রতিমা ভাঙচুর করা হয়েছে।

এবার আসুন আমরা আরো খুঁটিয়ে দেখি এই বছর দুর্গা পূজার আগে সেপ্টেম্বর ও অক্টোবরে পত্রিকায় প্রতিমা ভাঙার কয়টা ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে?

১/ বাগেরহাটে দুর্গা মন্দিরের প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা ইত্তেফাকে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে ১২ অক্টোবর, ২০১৯.

২/ মির্জাপুরে দুর্গা প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে কালের কণ্ঠে ১৯ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০১৯.

৩/ মুক্তাগাছায় দুর্গা মণ্ডপের প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে বাংলা ট্রিবিউনে অক্টোবর ১৭, ২০১৯।

৪/ সার্বজনীন দুর্গা মন্দিরে প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে ০৫ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১৯ সোনালী নিউজে।

৫/ গাজীপুরে মন্দিরের প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে ৯ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১৯ এ আমাদের সময়ে।

৬/ লালমনিরহাটে প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে ২ অক্টোবর, ২০১৯ এ বাংলাদেশ প্রতিদিনে।

৭/ নগরকান্দায় দুর্গা প্রতিমা ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে ১৭ অক্টোবর, ২০১৯ সকালের সময়ে।

এই মোট সাতটা ঘটনা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। দুর্গা পূজার অনেক আগে এই বছরের প্রথমদিকে চাঁদপুরে ও ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ায় দুটো মুর্তি ভাঙার ঘটনা ঘটে, যার কোনটাই দুর্গা প্রতিমা ছিলোনা। আমরা যদি এই দুটো ঘটনাও অন্তর্ভুক্ত করি তবে মোট ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা ৯টি, ১৩ টি নয়। যদিও ৯টি ঘটনার একটা ঘটাও উচিত নয় এবং দেশে আমাদের এই ধরণের ঘটনা ঘটা বন্ধ করতে হবে।

এইসবগুলো ঘটনার কারণ অনুসন্ধানে দেখা গেছে বেশীরভাগ ক্ষেত্রেই জমি নিয়ে পূর্ব বিরোধের ঘটনায় প্রতিমা ভাঙা হয়েছে। আর বাকি দুটো ঘটনার একটায় মন্দিরে এক নারীকে উত্ত্যক্ত করার প্রতিবাদ করায় রাতের আধারে দুর্গা প্রতিমা ভেঙেছে দুর্বৃত্তরা। আরেকটা ঘটনায় পূজা কমিটির কাছে বিয়ার খেতে চেয়েছিলো দুর্বৃত্তরা, সেটা না পাওয়ার তারা বিক্ষুব্ধ হয়ে প্রতিমা ভেঙেছে।

এগারো বছরের ফ্যাসিস্ট শাসনে সারা দেশে যখন আইনের শাসন ও সকল গণতান্ত্রিক প্রতিষ্ঠান ভেঙে পড়েছে, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে একাধিক টর্চার সেল প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়েছে, যুবলীগের প্রাইভেট টর্চার সেল আর আইন শৃংখলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর অব্যাহত মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘনের ঘটনার পাশাপাশি প্রাইভেট ডিটেনশন সেন্টারে গুম করে রাখা হচ্ছে, নৈশ ভোটের প্রতারনায় যখন সমস্ত রাষ্ট্রিয় প্রতিষ্ঠান ও বাহিনীকে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে তখন সমাজের প্রত্যেক স্তরে দুর্বৃত্তায়ন ঘটবে।

এই প্রতিমা ভাঙার ঘটনাগুলো প্রমাণ করে ধর্মীয় বিভেদ এই ঘটনা ঘটার উপলক্ষ নয়। উপলক্ষ হচ্ছে, অপেক্ষাকৃত দুর্বলের উপরে সবল দুর্বৃত্তের অত্যাচার। এটাকে হিন্দুদের উপরে ডিভাউট মুসলমানের আক্রমণ বলে চিত্রিত করার কোন উপায় নেই।

হিন্দুদের প্রতিমা ভাঙার সমস্যা একমাত্র ফ্যাসিস্ট শাসনের উচ্ছেদের মাধ্যমে একটি আধুনিক রিপাবলিক গড়ার মধ্যে দিয়েই সমাধান হতে পারে। এর জন্য হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়কেই আগে ফ্যাসিস্ট শাসকের ভোট ব্যাংক হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হওয়া বন্ধ করতে হবে।
