Soon after police on 6th November, 2016, set fire to the huts of a Santhal village in Gaibandha we saw its video. Police in uniform were found torching some huts, that video clearly showed. After that video clip, which became viral in the social media was published in the mainstream international media a court ordered a judicial inquiry into that incident.
Local media in Bangladesh then reported that a judicial inquiry had found the policemen to be involved in the arson in Gaibandha. Then the home minister assured that he would look into the case and the policemen would face punishment for their crime, local media reported then.
Sometime later, a departmental inquiry by police too found the two policemen involved in the Gaibandha arson, it was reported in the media in 2017. In a statement police then intimated the court that two police men were being suspended for setting alight some Santhal huts. The policemen would be tried and face punishment, the court was told.
Police authorities had the video clip with them and it clearly showed that two policemen, who were in uniform, were setting fire to the huts. Yet, now the names of those two policemen have disappeared from the police charge-sheet.
In a very interesting style those two policemen have been exempted, despite the presence of evidence. We cannot hope to see justice in the case of a crime committed by some policemen when their colleagues are assigned to prosecute them?
We will never forget what happened in Gaibandha. We will keep telling the world how police set fire to the huts of the poor people in the Santhal village in attempt to evict the members of the ethnic minority from their own land. We will also tell how police saved their culprit colleagues from trial and punishment.

গাইবান্ধার সাঁওতাল পল্লিতে ২০১৬ সালের ৬ই নভেম্বর পুলিশ নিজের হাতে আগুন লাগিয়েছিলো আমরা এই ভাইরাল ভিডিও তখনই দেখেছিলাম। আন্তর্জাতিক সংবাদ মাধ্যমে ইউনিফর্মে থাকা পুলিশের কুঁড়েঘরে আগুন দেয়ার সেই ভিডিও প্রকাশিত হওয়ার পর আদালত ওই ঘটনার বিচারবিভাগীয় তদন্তের নির্দেশ দেয়।
সেই সময় হওয়া বিচার বিভাগীয় তদন্তে পুলিশের সংশ্লিষ্টতা পাওয়া যায় বলে গণমাধ্যমে খবর প্রকাশিত হয়। স্বরাস্ট্রমন্ত্রী তখন বলেছিলেন, বিষয়টা খতিয়ে দেখে দোষী পুলিশ বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হবে।
কিছুদিন পর পুলিশের নিজস্ব বিভাগীয় তদন্তেও জানা যায় যে গাইবান্ধার ঘটনায় পুলিশ সংশ্লিষ্ট ছিলো। পুলিশ তখন আদালতকে জানায় যে আগুন লাগানোর ঘটনায় সরাসরি জড়িত থাকার জন্য দু’জন পুলিশকে করা হচ্ছে এবং তাদের বিচার এবং শাস্তি হবে।
পুলিশের নিজের হাতে স্পষ্ট ভিডিও ছিলো যে পুলিশ উর্দি পরেই আগুন দিচ্ছে। অথচ চার্জশীটে এখন ওই ঘটনায় পুলিশের নাম নাই।
কিন্তু কী চমৎকারভাবে এখন পুলিশকে গাইবান্ধার ঘটনায় দায়মুক্তি দেয়া হলো। নিজের নাগরিকের ঘরে আগুন দেয়া গণশত্রু পুলিশের কাছে পুলিশেরই বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ গঠনের দায়িত্ব দিলে তো এমনই হবে।
ওরা ভেবেছে আমরা ভুলে বসে আছি। মোটেই না। আমরা ঘটনা ভুলিনি, কখনো ভুলবো না। শুধু তাই নয়, সারা দুনিয়াকে চিৎকার করে জানাবো এই পুলিশ জাতিগত সংখ্যালঘু সাঁওতালদের তাদের বৈধ ভূমি থেকে উচ্ছেদের জন্য আগুন দিয়ে সারা গ্রাম পুড়িয়ে দিয়েছিলো। আর সেই দোষী পুলিশকর্মীদের বিরুদ্ধে পুলিশ শাস্তির কোনো প্রক্রিয়াই শুরু করতে চায়নি।
