In a terrible train accident at Kulaura in Bangladesh unknown number of people were killed and injured. Many suspect, the figures related those killed and injured are higher that what the government claimed.
Now it has come to light that local people had complained about the fish plates missing from the railway track there. The villagers had also expressed concerns that because of the missing fish plates the track was weak which could lead to a major accident. But the authorities did not pay heed to their complaint and concerns.
In an investigative report the Daily Star reported that at many places across the country metal fish plates on the railway tracks have been replaced by bamboo poles by the railway authorities. Now, Md Nurul Islam Sujan, the railway minister of Bangladesh, has admitted that the railway engineers used bamboo poles in place of metal fish plates in Kulaura.
While he headed the ministry, former railway minister Mujibul Haque, too had said that use of fish plates made of bamboo, instead of steel, was perfectly logical.
Fish plates across the world are made of metal, usually high grade steel. But, in Bangladesh the authorities are knowingly using bamboo poles as fish plates at places, threatening the lives of the railway passengers. In most other countries railway officials would be fired and sent to jail if they are found in such reckless act of using bamboo poles on railway track. But, in Bangladesh even the railway minister is supporting the use of bamboo as fish plates, very surprisingly. In such situation, we cannot expect any action from the government against the railway officials who replaced metal fish plates with those made of bamboo.
Let us ask this question to the Western powers- who have all along supported Sheikh Hasina and her government- why we cannot call the Kulaura accident a case of murder. They should also answer why they have remained silent after the people of Bangladesh were deprived of their rights to vote out this incapable government.

কয়েকদিন আগে সিলেটের কুলাউড়ায় ট্রেনের ভয়াবহ দুর্ঘটনায় অজ্ঞাত সংখ্যক যাত্রী আহত ও নিহত হয়েছে। দেশের মানুষ সন্দেহ করে যে সরকার আহত ও নিহতদের সংখ্যা কমিয়ে দেখিয়েছে।
সেই সময়েই জানা গেছে যে স্থানীয়েরা অনেক আগে থেকেই রেলের লাইনের ফিশ প্লেটে না থাকার বিষয়ে অভিযোগ করে আসছিলো এবং দুর্ঘটনার আশংকা প্রকাশ করছিলো। কেউ তাদের কথায় কর্ণপাত করেনি।
বাংলাদেশের স্বনামখ্যাত ইংরেজি দৈনিক ডেইলি স্টারের একটি অনুসন্ধানী প্রতিবেদনে দেখা যায় বাংলাদেশের অনেক রেল লাইনে লোহার ফিশ প্লেটের বদলে বাঁশ ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। রেল মন্ত্রী মো. নুরুল ইসলাম সুজন এখন নিজেও স্বীকার করেছে তার মন্ত্রণালয়ই রেল লাইনে লোহার ফিশ প্লেটের বদলে বাঁশ ব্যবহার করেছিলো।
এর আগেও যিনি রেলমন্ত্রী ছিলেন সেই মুজিবুল হক রেললাইনে লোহার ফিশ প্লেটের বদলে বাঁশ ব্যবহার করার সাফাই দিতে গিয়ে বলেছিলেন, রেল লাইনে বাঁশের ব্যবহার শতভাগ যৌক্তিক।
সারা পৃথিবীতেই ধাতব ফিশ প্লেট ব্যবহার করা হয় যা সাধারণত উঁচু মানের ইস্পাত দিয়ে তৈরী। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে রেল কর্তৃপক্ষ জেনেশুনেই বাঁশের ফিশ প্লেট ব্যবহার করছে অনেক ক্ষেত্রে যা রেল যাত্রীদের জীবন নিয়ে ছিনিমিনি খেলা মাত্র।
অন্য প্রায় সব দেশেই রেলের অফিসারদের চাকরীতো যেতই আর জেলও হতো তারা যদি তাদের রেল লাইনে এইরকম দায়িত্বজ্ঞানহীন হয়ে ধাতব ফিশ প্লেটের বদলে বাঁশের ফিশ প্লেট বসাতো। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে তো দেশের রেলমন্ত্রীই ধাতব ফিশ প্লেটের বদলে বাঁশের ফিশ প্লেটের ব্যবহার সমর্থন করছেন। এই অবস্থায় বাঁশের ফিশ প্লেট রেল লাইনে বসানোর জন্য রেলের কোনো অফিসারের বিরুদ্ধে সরকার কোনো শাস্তিমূলক পদক্ষেপ নিবে বলে আশা রাখা যায়না।
এই হাসিনা সরকারকে যেই পশ্চিমা শক্তি পরোক্ষ সমর্থন দিয়ে চলেছে তাঁরাই এটার জবাব দিক যে এটা সতেচন হত্যাকাণ্ড কিনা। তাঁরাই জবাব দিক এই অযোগ্য শাসককে ভোট দিয়ে বদলানোর অধিকার থেকে কেন বাংলাদেশের জনগণকে বঞ্চিত করা হলেও তাঁরা টুঁ শব্দটা করেনি।
