Palash Kumar Roy, a young lawyer has been burnt to death in jail custody in a horrifying style. Kohinoor Chemical Company, where Palash worked as a law officer in the past, filed a financial corruption- related suit against him some time ago.
On March 25, Palash staged a demonstration on a Dhaka street taking along his relatives and friends to highlight the “bogus” case against him. They made a human chain and demanded the intervention of the Prime Minister in the case. At one point during the demonstration Palash allegedly used derogatory words against the PM, police and the administration.
Police arrested him on this charge soon after the demonstration. Later that evening one Rajib Rana filed a complaint against Palash to the local police station. Immediately Palash was picked up by police, presented at a court which sent him to jail.
Palash was to be sent to Dhaka on April 26 in the afternoon. But, he came running out of a toilet near the hospital when he was found badly burnt. The jail guards there rescued him and put out the flames. Palash was left with 47% burns. Rangpur Medical College Hospital referred him to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. But, he breathed his last at the Dhaka hospital on April 30.
Palash suffered 47% burns which means he was exposed to fire for a long time. Such burning is not possible from a small accident inside the toilet. We have good reason to believe that Palash became a victim of political vengeance. We should ask Rajib Rana what exactly forced him to file the complaint against Palash. The court should also let us know why Rana was personally aggrieved and forced the court to accept his suit against Palash.

অবিশ্বাস্য এক ঘটনা!! পলাশ কুমার রায় নামের একজন তরুন আইনজীবীকে কারা হেফাজতে পুড়িয়ে হত্যা করা হয়েছে।
কোহিনুর কেমিক্যাল কোম্পানি নামে একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান পলাশের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা দায়ের করেছিল। সেই মামলা প্রত্যাহারের দাবিতে গত ২৫ মার্চ দুপুরে পরিবারের লোকজন নিয়ে পঞ্চগড় শহরের শের-ই-বাংলা পার্ক সংলগ্ন মহাসড়কে এসে মানববন্ধন শুরু করেন। মানব বন্ধনের একপর্যায়ে হ্যান্ডমাইকে পলাশ প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নামে, প্রশাসন ও পুলিশ বাহিনী সম্পর্কেও অশালীন বক্তব্য দেন এই অভিযোগে সদর থানা পুলিশ তাকে গ্রেফতার করে। ওইদিন বিকালে প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে কটূক্তি করার অভিযোগে স্থানীয় রাজীব রানা নামে এক তরুণ তার বিরুদ্ধে সদর থানায় মামলা করেন। ওই দিনই তাকে আদালতের মাধ্যমে কারাগারে পাঠানো হয়।
আইনজীবী পলাশকে গত ২৬ এপ্রিল বিকালে ঢাকায় পাঠানোর কথা ছিল। কিন্তু সকালে হঠাৎ করে হাসপাতালের বাইরে থাকা একটি টয়লেট থেকে তিনি অগ্নিদগ্ধ অবস্থায় দৌড়ে বের হয়ে আসেন। এ সময় কারারক্ষীরা তাকে উদ্ধার করেন এবং শরীরের আগুন নেভান। আগুনে তার শরীরের ৪৭ শতাংশ পুড়ে যায়। রংপুর মেডিক্যাল কলেজ হাসপাতাল থেকে উন্নত চিকিৎসার জন্য পরদিনই তাকে ঢাকা মেডিক্যাল কলেজ হাসপাতালের বার্ন ইউনিটে ভর্তি করা হয়। গত ৩০ এপ্রিল দুপুরে সেখানে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় পলাশ কুমার রায় মারা যান।
একজন কারাবন্দী মানুষের শরীরের ৪৭% পুড়ে যাওয়ার জন্য তাকে দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে আগুনে পুড়তে হবে। কারাগারের টয়লেটে এই ধরনের আগুন দুর্ঘটনাবশত লাগতে পারেনা।
আমরা অনুমান করতে পারি পলাশ কুমার রায় রাজনৈতিক প্রতিহিংসার শিকার হয়েছে। পলাশের বিরুদ্ধে যে মামলা করেছে তাকে প্রশ্ন করা উচিত, শেখ হাসিনাকে কেউ একজন কটুক্তি করার জন্য সে কেন কেন মামলা করতে গেলো? আদালতকেও বলতে হবে কোন কারণে রাজীব রানা ব্যক্তিগতভাবে সংক্ষুব্ধ হয়েছিলো যে তার মামলা আদালতকে গ্রহণ করতে হল।
