Shaheen, an assistant manager in Bengal Glass and a part time employee at the IT section of Akiz Group, disappeared from Tejgaon industrial area of Dhaka on May 2.
After Shaheen’s relatives filed a complaint, police visited the spot from where Shaheen was reportedly picked up and collected video footage from the CCTV cameras installed there. Some men had rounded up Shaheen and forced him into a microbus, the footage revealed.
Recently, the international human rights group of FIDH said in a report that 507 people became victims of enforced disappearance in Bangladesh, between 2009 and 2018. Among them 62 were found killed, 288 returned alive and 159 remained untraced. The FIDH report also said that members of DB (Detective Branch) Police, RAB, DGFI and NSI were behind all the disappearances.
Enforced disappearance is a crime against humanity. All the cases of disappearances, including those 507, will be brought to justice in Bangladesh one day. No culprit behind these crimes will be spared, however powerful they appear now.
Gowher Rizvi, international affairs adviser to PM Sheikh Hasina, said to Al Jazeera recently that Bangladesh government did not need to make anyone disappear because it can always arrest any citizen if it wants. Mr Rizvi did not speak the truth.
In two situations the government makes people victims of enforced disappearance in Bangladesh. The government makes those people disappear when it finds that its law enforcement agencies cannot arrest them by filing cases in the court. The disappearance of former ambassador Maroof Zaman was such a case. Secondly, those who cannot be hanged following a court verdict in favour of the government, are also made to disappear by the government. Former BNP Member of Parliament Iliyas Ali is an example of this type of case. Ali has remained untraced after he became a victim of enforced disappearance in 2012.
The government could have arrested Shahidul Alam after filing a case against him in the court and carrying an arrest warrant. Why did the police raid his home at night, took him away quietly and beat him up badly at the office of DB before filing any case against him?

আবারো শুরু হয়েছে গুম। রাজধানীর তেজগাঁও থেকে আইটি বিশেষজ্ঞ আতাউর রহমান শাহীনকে গুম করা হয়েছে।
শাহীন বেঙ্গল গ্লাসের সহকারী ব্যবস্থাপক ও আকিজ গ্রুপে আইটি সেকশনে খণ্ডকালীন চাকরি করতেন। এই মে মাসের দুই তারিখে সন্ধ্যায় তেজগাঁও শিল্পাঞ্চল এলাকার আকিজ হাউজের সামনে থেকে একটি মাইক্রোবাসে করে তাকে তুলে নেয়া হয়েছে।
শাহীনের পরিবারের সদস্যরা তেজগাঁও শিল্পাঞ্চল থানায় একটি লিখিত অভিযোগ দিলে পুলিশ ঘটনাস্থল পরিদর্শন করে সিসিটিভির ফুটেজ সংগ্রহ করেছে। ফুটেজে কয়েকজন লোক শাহীনকে মাইক্রোবাসে করে তুলে নেয়ার দৃশ্য দেখা গেছে।
সম্প্রতি মানবাধিকার সংস্থা গুম নিয়ে এফ আই ডি এইচের প্রকাশিত রিপোর্টে বলা হয়েছে, ২০০৯ সাল থেকে ২০১৮ সাল পর্যন্ত ৫০৭ জনকে গুম করা হয়েছে এর মধ্যে ৬২ জনকে মৃত অবস্থায় পাওয়া গেছে, ২৮৮ জন ফিরে এসেছে আর ১৫৯ জনের এখনো কোন খবর নাই। এফ আইডি এইচের রিপোর্টে বলা হয়েছে গুম গুলো ঘটিয়েছে ডিবি পুলিশ, র্যা ব, ডিজিএফআই ও এন এস আই।
গুম একটি মানবতার বিরুদ্ধে অপরাধ। ৫০৭ টি গুমের ঘটনারই একদিন বাংলাদেশের মাটিতে বিচার হবে। কাউকেই রেহাই দেয়া হবেনা, আজকে তাদের যতই শক্তিশালী বলে মনে হোকনা কেন।
গওহর রিজভি আল জাজিরাতে বলেছিলো, সরকার তো চাইলে কাউকে এরেস্টই করতে পারে, গুম কেন করবে সরকার? সরকারের তো গুম করার প্রয়োজন নাই। গওহর রিজভি যা লুকাতে চেয়েছেন তা হচ্ছে, সরকার দুই ধরণের ক্ষেত্রে গুম করে। প্রথম ক্ষেত্রে সরকার যাকে মামলা দিয়ে এরেস্ট করতে পারবে না তাকেই গুম করে, যেমন সাবেক রাষ্ট্রদূত মারুফ জামান। অথবা দ্বিতীয়ত যাকে দুনিয়া থেকে সরিয়ে দিতে চায় কিন্তু মামলা করে ফাঁসি দেয়া সম্ভব নয় তাকে গুম করে, যেমন হয়েছিল ইলিয়াস আলীর ক্ষেত্রে।
সরকার তো গওহর রিজভির দাবীকৃত তথাকথিত ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু শহীদুল আলমের নামে আদালতে মামলা দায়ের করে আদালতের গ্রেপ্তারি পরোয়ানা দিয়েই শহীদুল আলমকে গ্রেপ্তার করতে পারতো। কেন মামলা দেয়ার আগেই ডিবি পুলিশকে গভীর রাতে বাসায় পাঠিয়ে তুলে নিয়ে গিয়ে ডিবি কার্যালয়ে পেটানো হয়েছিলো?
