Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif, the acting general secretary of the Awami League, has said, “Our government has successfully thwarted the threats of the super cyclone, thanks to the advance information we received from the Bangabandhu satellite. It helped us minimize the destruction to a large extent.”
He further stated that the meteorological department, through the Bangabandhu satellite, helped them obtain information regarding the super cyclone that originated at a depth of two thousand kilometres inside the sea.
The Bangabandhu Satellite is one that specializes in communication and broadcasting. This satellite was built for the purpose of communication, that is precisely what it is used for. In fact, in the past, the Bangladesh government never made any claim that it had weather forecasting abilities. The satellite’s key role is to serve the TV channels. With the assistance of this satellite, a D.T.H. or Direct to Home dish service will be launched.
Apart from this, this satellite may supply internet to the areas which haven’t been reached by optic or submarine cables yet.
Some satellites are indeed used to make weather forecast, do geological survey, take photos, prepare maps, study the pattern of change in climate etc.. But, Bangabandhu satellite cannot shoot photos, process images and measure the flood situation or water level. It can also not be used to measure distance, monitor the navigability and path of a river, make weather forecast, to prepare accurate digital maps of the water bodies and roads. In other words, it cannot be used as an earth observatory.
But, the Awami League leader made the false claim that Bangabandhu satellite helped contain the extent of destruction by the super cyclone Fani. We have to call him a liar, if he is not really a fool. Such leaders are ruling Bangladesh now. We did not know it before that Bangladesh would be fated to be ruled by such leaders.

আওয়ামী লীগের ভারপ্রাপ্ত সাধারণ সম্পাদক মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ বলেছেন, “বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইটের কারণে আগাম তথ্য পেয়েছিলাম বলে আমাদের সরকার ঘূর্ণিঝড় মোকাবেলায় সর্বাত্মক প্রস্তুতি গ্রহণ করেছিল। যার ফলে ক্ষয়ক্ষতি কমিয়ে আনা সম্ভব হয়েছে।”
তিনি আরও জানান, বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইট উৎক্ষেপণের মাধ্যমে গভীর সমুদ্রের দুই হাজার কিলোমিটারে শুরু হওয়া ঘূর্ণিঝড়ের খবর আবহাওয়া অধিদফতরের মাধ্যমে সংগ্রহ করা হয়েছে।
বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইট যোগাযোগ ও সম্প্রচার স্যাটেলাইট। এটা যোগাযোগের কাজের জন্য বানানো স্যাটেলাইট, তাই এটা দিয়ে শুধু যোগাযোগের কাজই করা যাবে। এমনকি বাংলাদেশ সরকার কখনো দাবী করেনি যে এটা দিয়ে আবহাওয়ার পূর্বাভাষ জানা যাবে।
টিভি চ্যানেলগুলোর স্যাটেলাইট সেবা নিশ্চিত করাই বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইটের মূল কাজ। এর সাহায্যে চালু করা যাবে ডিটিএইচ বা ডিরেক্ট টু হোম ডিশ সার্ভিস। এছাড়া যেসব জায়গায় অপটিক কেবল বা সাবমেরিন কেবল পৌছায় নি সেসব জায়গায় এ স্যাটেলাইটের সাহায্যে নিশ্চিত হতে পারে ইন্টারনেট সংযোগ।
আবহাওয়া পূর্বাভাষ, ভূতাত্ত্বিক জরিপ, ছবি তোলা, মানচিত্র তৈরি, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের সমীক্ষা ইত্যাকার কাজগুলো ভিন্ন ভিন্ন স্যাটেলাইট দিয়ে করানো হয়।
বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইট দিয়ে ছবি তোলা, ইমেজ প্রসেসিং, বন্যা পরিস্থিতি পরিমাপ, পানির উচ্চতা নির্ণয়, আবহাওয়া পূর্বাভাষ, দূরত্ব পরিমাপ, নদীর নাব্যতা ও গতিপথ পর্যবেক্ষণ, জলাভূমির সংকোচন-প্রসারণ, রাস্তাঘাটের নিপুণ ডিজিটাল মানচিত্র, আর্থ অবজারভেটরি কিংবা জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন সংক্রান্ত কাজগুলো করা যাবে না। এর জন্য অন্যান্য বিশেষায়িত কৃত্রিম উপগ্রহ রয়েছে।
অথচ মিডিয়াতে মিথ্যা দাবী করলেন এই আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা যে ঘূর্ণিঝড় ফণীর ভয়াবহতা নিয়ন্ত্রণ করেছে সরকার এই বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইট বা কৃত্র্রিম উপগ্রহ দিয়ে। উনাকে হয় বলতে হবে মূর্খ অথবা মিথ্যাবাদী। আমাদের ভাগ্যটাই এমন যে, এমনি নেতারাই এখন বাংলাদেশ চালাচ্ছেন।
