With modern weapons Pakistani military forces pounced on people in Dhaka while they were asleep at night of March 25, 1971. They set alight towns and villages and killed people. Their local associates took part in looting and other nefarious activities. For nine months they continued the massacre in a ruthless style.
Awami League, which happens to be Bangladesh’s ruling party, led this country’s liberation war in 1971. Fifty years after Bangladesh won the independence, an Awami League leader has led a violent attack against a tribal locality using machetes, axes, bows and arrows and petrol. They beat up the people badly before setting their huts on fire. The attackers also looted utensils, provisions and cash from the people.
In many ways the latest violence is identical to what we witnessed in 1971. Only the perpetrators or the rulers in the country have changed. However, the Pakistani rulers conducted a free and fair election. People could cast their votes for the candidates they wanted. So, the Bengalis won the majority of the seats. Now, free and fair election is no more a reality in this Bangladesh. We have lost our voting rights. I think nowhere else in the world any community has suffered such ridiculous misfortune.

১৯৭১ এর ২৫ মার্চ ঘুমন্ত ঢাকাবাসীর উপরে পাকিস্তানি সামরিক বাহিনী অত্যাধুনিক অস্ত্র নিয়ে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়েছিলো।
আগুনে আগুনে ভস্মীভূত করে দিয়েছিলো একের পর এক জনপদ। তাদের স্থানীয় দোসরেরা লুটপাট করেছিলো যা সামনে পেয়েছিলো। শুরু হয়েছিলো নয় মাসব্যাপী গণহত্যার এক নির্মম ইতিহাস। তখন সেই মুক্তিযুদ্ধে রাজনৈতিক নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিলো আওয়ামী লীগ, যারা আজকে বাংলাদেশের শাসক দল। অথচ আশ্চর্য স্বাধীনতার প্রায় পঞ্চাশ বছর পরে আজ আওয়ামী লীগের নেতার নেতৃত্বে সন্ত্রাসীরা হাতে ধারালো বড় হাসুয়া, কুড়াল, তীর-ধনুক, লাঠি ও পেট্রোল নিয়ে আদিবাসী জনপদে হামলা চালাচ্ছে। তারা মারপিট করে বাড়ি-ঘরে আগুন ধরিয়ে দিচ্ছে। থালা-বাসন, চাউল, নগদ টাকাসহ হাতের সামনে যা পেয়েছে তা লুট করে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে।
কোন কিছুই বদলায়নি। শাসক বদলেছে শুধু। তবুও পাকিস্তানী শাসকেরা একটা ফেয়ার নির্বাচন দিয়েছিলো। সে জন্য বাঙ্গালীরা পাকিস্তানের মেজরিটি আসন পেয়েছিলো। আজ আওয়ামী লীগের শাসনে আমাদের ভোটের অধিকারটুকুও হারিয়ে গিয়েছে। পৃথিবীর কোন জাতির জীবনে এমন কৌতুকপ্রদ দুর্ভাগ্য হয়েছে কিনা জানা নেই।
