Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) men fired upon some villagers and killed three or four of them in north-western Bangladesh’s Thakurgaon district yesterday. Four villagers got killed in the firing by BGB, UNB news agency reported. Others put the death toll at three. One Secondary School Certificate examinee was among those killed. At least 16 others, including some women and children, received gunshot injuries. The number of injured villagers makes it clear that the BGB men fired several rounds.
BGB and police claimed that some cow smugglers aimed to snatch seized cows- which had been smuggled from India- and attacked a BGB patrol violently. BGB men opened fire in self defence, the border guard and police officials said. Some local leaders of the ruling Awami League party and other villagers claimed that the BGB men seized some home-raised family cows which had no connection with smuggling. After the villagers insisted the BGB men to release the seized cows, it led to an altercation during which they started the firing, local people said.
In a press conference the BGB said: “Our men opened fire in the air to frighten and disperse the crowd.” The question is: how did the villagers got killed if the BGB personnel fired in the air?
BGB officer Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masood said that the force would file legal suits against the cattle smugglers in the area. It means, some villagers are going to be harassed by police cases now.
We remember how some days ago some trigger-happy BGB men kicked a magistrate in Dhaka because he refused to issue permission to fire upon the garment workers who were demonstrating on the street seeking higher wage.
We rarely see incident in which border guards of a country kill or injure people inside its own territory.
Let’s not forget that men from this force, which was then called BDR or Bangladesh Rifles, killed 57 of their own officers in 2009. It is easy for them to sue some innocent villagers as smugglers. People will not tolerate whatever the BGB officials do following up the Thakurgaon case now, after they have killed the villagers.
Here is a video clip which was shot in Thakurgaon on Tuesday. It’s amply clear from this video that the BGB men were not attacked before they fired. Among the people, who have gathered on the spot demanding the return of the cows, there are some village women. It does not appear to be a case involving cow smugglers.

ঠাকুরগাঁওয়ে বিজিবির গুলিতে তিনজন গ্রামবাসী নিহত হয়েছে; তারমধ্যে একজন এস এস সি পরীক্ষার্থী। এই গুলি ছোঁড়ায় নারী শিশু সহ আরো কমপক্ষে ষোল জন আহত হয়। হতাহতের ঘটনায় বুঝা যায় ব্যাপক পরিমাণে গুলিবর্ষণ করেছিল বিজিবি। বিজিবি এবং পুলিস একসাথেই দাবী করছে গরু চোরাকারবারীরা আটক করা গরু ছাড়িয়ে নিতে সংঘবদ্ধ হামলা করলে বিজিবি নিজেদের প্রাণরক্ষার্থে গুলি করে। স্থানীয় সরকারি দলের নেতা সহ সকল গ্রামবাসি দাবী করছে, গৃহস্হের বাড়িতে পালিত গরু আটক করা হলে সংঘর্ষ বাঁধে এবং তখন গ্রামের হাটে আসা শত শত মানুষের ওপর বিজিবি উপর্যপুরি গুলি চালায়।
বিজিবি নিজেদের হত্যাকাণ্ড জায়েজ করতে সকল গ্রামবাসীকেই চোরাকারবারী বানিয়ে দিয়েছে। বিজিবি বলেছে, “তারা আমাদেরকে যেভাবে আক্রমণ করেছে, গুলি না করলে, আমাদের সদস্যরা লাশ হয়ে ফিরে আসত।”
এই একই সংবাদ সন্মেলনে বিজিবি বলেছে, “আত্মরক্ষায় সংঘবদ্ধ চোরাকারবারীদের ছত্রভঙ্গ করতে বিজিবি সদস্যরা ফাঁকা গুলি ছোঁড়ে।” যদি বিজিবি ফাঁকাই গুলি করে থাকে তাতে মানুষ হতাহত হয় কিভাবে?
এ ঘটনায় সংঘবদ্ধ চোরাকারবারীদের বিরুদ্ধে মামলার প্রস্তুতি চলছে বলে জানায় বিজিবির অফিসার লে. কর্নেল তুহিন মোহাম্মদ মাসুদ। এর মানে হচ্ছে এখন মামলা দিয়ে গ্রামবাসীকে হয়রানি করা হবে।
আমাদের মনে আছে এই ট্রিগার-হ্যাপি বিজিবি কয়েকদিন আগেই ঢাকায় আন্দোলনরত গার্মেন্টস শ্রমিকদের উপরে গুলি চালানোর অনুমতি না দেয়ায় ম্যাজিস্ট্রেটকে লাথি মেরেছিলো।
সম্ভবত পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে এটাই প্রথম ঘটনা যেখানে রাষ্ট্রের সীমান্তরক্ষীরা নিজেদের দেশের সীমানার ভিতরের জনপদে নাগরিকের উপরে গুলিবর্ষণ করে নাগরিকদের হতাহত করলো।
এই বিজিবির পূর্বসূরী বিডিআর নিজেদের হেড কোয়ার্টারে যখন তাদের কমান্ডার সাতান্ন সেনা অফিসারকে ঠাণ্ডা মাথায় হত্যা করতে পারে, গ্রামবাসীকে হত্যার পরে তারা সকল গ্রামবাসীকে চোরাকারবারী বানাবে এ আর বিচিত্র কি? রাষ্ট্রের নাগরিক হত্যার পরে সেই বিজিবির কোন সাফাই কি জনগণের কাছে গ্রহণযোগ্য হতে পারে?
ঠাকুরগাঁওয়ে বিজিবির গুলির ঘটনার একটা ভিডিও এসেছে। তাতে বিজিবির গুলি চালানোর আগে গ্রামবাসীরা তাদের যে আক্রমণ করেনি তা প্রায় স্পষ্ট বুঝা যাচ্ছে। গরু ফেরত নেয়ার দাবীতে যারা জমায়েত হয়েছে তাদের মধ্যে মহিলাও আছে দেখা যাচ্ছে। এই জমায়েত চোরাকারবারীদের হতে পারে বলে কি আপনার মনে হচ্ছে?
