The case of Jah Alam stands as a glaring evidence of how the state of Bangladesh has turned into an institution of oppression. Following some forgery-related cases filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Alam spent three years in jail. Now it has come to light that the poor man was completely innocent having no connection with the forgery at all. Poor Alam had to lose almost everything to fight the case in the court.

The court has acquitted Alam now. What will happen to them who forced him into this suffering in jail and took away three years from his life? Should those callous and inefficient government officials not be brought to justice?

In Bangladesh there are thousands of people who are languishing in jail like Alam and they did not have any connection with the crimes they had allegedly committed. There are people who were infirm or bedridden when, according to police, they took part in rioting, bombing and other violent crimes. Many of these innocent people are doing their rounds in the court now. My Facebook posts highlighted a few such cases.

বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্রটি কীভাবে একটি নিপীড়নের প্রতিষ্ঠানে পরিণত হয়েছে এই জাহালমের কেইস তার একটা জ্বলন্ত প্রমাণ।

দুর্নীতিদমন কমিশনের মামলায় নির্দোষ ও হতদরিদ্র জাহালম তিন বছর জেলে কাটিয়েছে। মামলার খরচ জোগাতে তার পরিবার আরো নিঃস্ব হয়েছে। আদালত তাকে ছেড়ে দিলেও যাদের অপরাধমূলক অদক্ষতা একজন নিরীহ মানুষের জীবন থেকে তিনবছর কেড়ে নিলো তাদের কী শাস্তি হবে?

এটা তো গেলো এক জাহালমের গল্প। বাংলাদেশের কারাগারে এমন অসংখ্য কেইসে আটক মানুষেরা আছে যারা অপরাধের সাথে কখোনোই যুক্ত ছিলোনা। এমনকি যাদের সেই কথিত অপরাধ সংগঠনের জন্য শারীরিক সক্ষমতাও ছিলোনা। কথিত অপরাধ সংগঠনের সময়ে অপরাধ সংগঠনের স্থানে উপস্থিত থাকা তার পক্ষে অসম্ভব ছিলো, এমন ক্ষেত্রেও মামলায় অভিযুক্ত হয়ে অসংখ্য মানুষ এখন হাইকোর্টের বারান্দায় ঘুরছে। এমন কিছু ঘটনা আমি আমার লেখায় সম্প্রতি তুলে ধরেছি।
