We all along said that the December 30 general election had been massively rigged. Now, we are immensely thankful to Transparency International Bangladesh for confirming what we reported.

Electoral irregularities took place in 47 of the 50 constituencies where TIB conducted the survey. The irregularities include: illegal stamping of ballot papers during the previous night, ballot stuffing after capturing the voting booths on the day of election, voters not being allowed to cast their votes, voters forced to cast vote only in favour of ruling Awami League party, driving away the opposition polling agents from the voting centres etc.

It is very interesting to find that Sultana Kamal, a long-time friend of Sheikh Hasina, happens to be the chairman of TIB. The significance of this report by the anti-corruption watchdog is going to be massive. I am sure TIB had had a solid international backing behind this survey and report. This report will serve as an important weapon for those who are fighting to restore democracy in Bangladesh.

However, it must be noted that among the foreign media outlets BBC Bangla, Al Jazeera, Voice of America, Daily Telegraph, New York Times, Deutsche Welle and a few others carried related reports on vote-rigging in Bangladesh in the past weeks and helped expose the massive level of manipulation in the general election. I am thankful to those media outlets. I am also thankful to a small section of the local media which at least hinted in their self-censored reports that vote-rigging had taken place in the election.

BBC Bangla deserves special credit for that bold report which revealed the incident of stuffing of ballot boxes hours before the polling started on December 30. I am also thankful to BBC Bangla for clearly presenting that element of evidence of vote-rigging.

সংসদ নির্বাচনের নামে গত ৩০ ডিসেম্বর তারিখে জাতির সঙ্গে যে প্রহসন ও প্রতারনা হয়েছে সেটা আমরা অনেকেই আগে থেকেই বলে আসছি। এখন সেই অভিযোগ গবেষনা রিপোর্টের মাধ্যমে প্রমাণ করার জন্য টি আই বি-কে আমাদের ধন্যবাদ দেয়া উচিত।

টিআইবি’র গবেষণায় অন্তর্ভুক্ত ৫০ টি আসনের মধ্যে ৪৭টি আসনে কোনো না কোনো নির্বাচনী অনিয়ম হয়েছে। অনিয়মের ধরনের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো: নির্বাচনের আগের রাতে ব্যালটে সিল মেরে রাখা, আগ্রহী ভোটারদের হুমকি দিয়ে তাড়ানো বা কেন্দ্রে প্রবেশ করতে না দেওয়া, বুথ দখল করে প্রকাশ্যে সিল মেরে জাল ভোট, ভোটারদের জোর করে নির্দিষ্ট মার্কায় ভোট দিতে বাধ্য করা, ভোট গ্রহণ শুরু হওয়ার আগেই ব্যালট পেপার ভর্তি বাক্স, ব্যালট পেপার শেষ হয়ে যাওয়া এবং প্রতিপক্ষের পোলিং এজেন্টকে কেন্দ্রে প্রবেশ করতে না দেওয়া।

এটা খুব কৌতূহলোদ্দীপক যে সুলতানা কামাল যিনি শেখ হাসিনার ব্যক্তিগত বন্ধুও বটে টি আই বির চেয়ারম্যান; তিনি ভোট নিয়ে আওয়ামী লীগের জন্য বিপদজনক এমন একটা ফলাফল প্রকাশ করলেন যখন সবাই মোটামুটি নিজের পিঠ বাঁচাতে ব্যস্ত। দুর্নীতিবিরোধী এই স্বনামধন্য আন্তর্জাতিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের তুলে ধরা এই ঘটনার তাৎপর্য গভীর হতে বাধ্য। টিআইবি কোন শক্ত সমর্থন ছাড়া এই কাজ করেছে এটা আমার জন্য মেনে নেয়া কঠিন। টিআইবির প্রতিবেদন গনতন্ত্রের সংগ্রামের জন্য একটা গুরুত্বপুর্ন অস্ত্র হয়ে থাকবে।

আমি অবশ্য ব্যক্তিগতভাবে কয়েকটি বিদেশী মিডিয়াকে ধন্যবাদ দিতে চাই, যারা তাদের অনুসন্ধানী প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ না করলে আমাদের পক্ষে এই ব্যাপক প্রহসনকে উন্মোচন করা কঠিন হতো। এদের মধ্যে আছে বিবিসি বাংলা, ভয়েস অব আমেরিকা, দ্য টেলিগ্রাফ, আল জাজিরা, নিউ ইয়র্ক টাইমস, ডয়েচে ভেলে। বিশেষ করে বিবিসি বাংলার কথা বলতেই হয়। তাদের রিপোর্ট ছাড়া প্রমাণ করা অসম্ভব হতো যে আগের রাতেই ব্যালট বাক্স ভরা হয়েছিলো। ভোট জালিয়াতির প্রত্যক্ষ প্রমাণ বিবিসিই প্রথম প্রকাশ করেছিলো।
