“Only those who will vote for (Awami League candidate) Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir will come to the voting centres. We will break your hands and legs if you turn up at any centre with plan to vote for another candidate,” leader of Awami Jubo League- youth wing of the ruling party- has threatened ahead of the general election in Bangladesh. And, this threat has been caught in a video which has been viral in the social media.
In the past weeks we have seen many such video clips in which the ruling party leaders have been found violently threatening the supporters of the opposition Oikya Front across the country. I hope, the international community can easily understand why Bangladesh has blocked the entry of the international observers for this crucial general election.
Although the ruling party leaders are issuing such violent threats clearly sending out repeated signals that they will not allow people to cast their votes in favour of the opposition party candidates, the international community has not raised the question how Bangladesh is preparing for a free, fair and all-inclusive election. This is very unusual, sadly.

“শুধুমাত্র (আওয়ামী লীগ প্রার্থী) ডা: মহিউদ্দিন খান আলমগীরকে যারা ভোট দিবেন তারাই সেন্টারে যাবেন। এর বাইরে যদি কেউ সেন্টারে যান আমি ….যুব লীগের পক্ষ থেকে বলে দিলাম, আপনাদের হাত-পা ভাইঙ্গা ঘরে পাঠাইমু।”
ডা: আলমগীরের এলাকায় এক যুবলীগের নেতা প্রকাশ্যে এই হুমকি দিয়েছে এবং সেই ভিডিও আমাদের সামনে এসেছে।
বিগত সপ্তাহগুলোতে আমরা ঠিক এই ধরণের অনেক ভিডিও দেখেছি যেখানে আওয়ামী লীগের নেতারা এভাবেই প্রকাশ্যে বিরোধী ঐক্য ফ্রন্টের প্রার্থীদের বিরুদ্ধে সহিংস নির্দেশনা দিচ্ছেন। এটাই বাংলাদেশে জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে সব আসনের চিত্র। এই কারণেই আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যবেক্ষকদের এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নির্বাচনের পর্যবেক্ষণে আসার বিষয়ে এতো বাধা আর ঢিলেমির সৃষ্টি করা হয়েছে।
যদিও আওয়ামী লীগ প্রকাশ্যেই বলছে বিরোধী দলের সমর্থকদের ভোট কেন্দ্রে আসতে দেয়া হবেনা। তবু আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায় এই হিংসাত্মক বক্তব্যের বিষয়ে কোন প্রশ্ন তোলেনি যে আদৌ বাংলাদেশে একটি অবাধ, সকলের অংশগ্রহণে নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন হবে কিনা? আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায়ের এই আচরণ দুঃখজনকভাবে অস্বাভাবিক।
