“On behalf of the government I am making this appeal- please vote in support of the pro-liberation party, please cast your vote in favour of the boat (election symbol of ruling Awami League party).”
The is is an open statement from the officer-in-charge of Kalaroa police station in Satkhira district. He is openly seeking votes in support of ruling Awami League party during the forthcoming general election. In a public rally he is asking people to vote for the ‘boat’- the election symbol of Awami League.
However, we know that no action will be taken against this police officer for this serious level of violation of code of conduct. In a civilised country this police officer would have lost his job immediately. But, in Bangladesh, for supporting the ruling party in this blatant style, this police officer is likely to be rewarded with plump post or something else.
We will also find this police officer perform election duty soon. Should the international community not ask Bangladesh government how it is going to hold a “free and fair” general election in such situation?

“আজকে আমি প্রশাসনের পক্ষ থেকে একটা কথা বলতে চাই যে স্বাধীনতার সপক্ষের শক্তিকে আপনারা ভোট দিবেন, নৌকা মার্কায় ভোট দিবেন।”
এটি কোনো আওয়ামী লীগের নেতার নির্বাচনী প্রচারের বক্তব্য নয়। এটি একটি জনসভায় সাতক্ষীরা জেলার কলারোয়া থানার ওসির সদ্য দেয়া বক্তব্য। তিনি আসন্ন জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে ক্ষমতাসীন আওয়ামী লীগ এবং নৌকা মার্কার পক্ষে প্রকাশ্যে ভোট চাইছেন। সমবেত জনতাকে প্রকাশ্য আওয়ামী লীগের নির্বাচনী প্রতীক নৌকা মার্কায় ভোট দেয়ার আহ্বান জানাচ্ছেন।
এই গুরুতর সরকারি চাকুরির আচরণ বিধি লঙ্ঘনেও এই থানার ওসির কিছুই হবেনা। কোন সভ্য রাষ্ট্র হলে এই কর্মকর্তাকে ততক্ষনাৎ চাকুরিচ্যুত করা হতো। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে এই কর্মকর্তাকে হয়তো পুরস্কৃতই করা হবে।
আমরা এই পুলিস অফিসারকে কিছুদিন পরেই নির্বাচনী দায়িত্ব পালন করতে দেখবো। এমন পুলিস অফিসারেরা নির্বাচনী দায়িত্ব পালন করলে কেমন “অবাধ ও নিরপেক্ষ” নির্বাচন হবে তা বাংলাদেশ সরকার ও তার নির্বাচন কমিশনের কাছে আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায়ের জানতে চাওয়া উচিত নয় কি?
