The print edition of “Prothom Alo” has carried the following news, but it’s missing from the newspaper’s online version.
The news carries a hint questioning the issue of so-called neutrality of the election commission (EC).
When Awami League issued nomination tickets between November 9 and 12, the roads around its office at the Dhaka’s key commercial area of Dhanmondi were blocked causing immense troubles to the people. However, that action by the Awami League did not amount to violation of code of conduct in the view of the EC. Then the secretary of the EC said that the incident of collection of the nomination took place in a limited area and so it could not be viewed as violation of code of conduct of the party.
But, today as the crowd of political leaders and activists gathering in front of the BNP office to collect nomination papers appears to be like a huge rally and much larger than what we saw in front of the Awami League office a few days ago, the EC is viewing it as a clear case of violation of code of conduct by the opposition party.
The EC is adopting two different views to treat the ruling and opposition parties. They are still assuring the international community that they will hold “free, fair and all-inclusive” elections in Bangladesh.

আজকে “প্রথম আলো”-র দ্বিতীয় পৃষ্ঠায় ছাপা হয়েছে এই সংবাদটা “চার দিন পর বিধির কথা মনে পড়ল ইসির” শিরোনামে। অবশ্য এই সংবাদটা “প্রথম আলো”-র অনলাইন ভার্শনে নেই।
এই সংবাদে নির্বাচন কমিশনের তথাকথিত নিরপেক্ষতা নিয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইশারা আছে। গত নয় থেকে বারো নভেম্বর যখন রাস্তা আটকে ঢাকাবাসীর অবর্ননীয় কষ্ট উতপাদন করে ঢাকার প্রানকেন্দ্র ধানমন্ডিতে মিছিল নিয়ে আওয়ামী লীগ অফিস থেকে মনোনয়নপত্র সংগ্রহ করা হয়েছে তখন নির্বাচন কমিশনের মনে হয়নি এটা আচরনবিধির লংঘন। সেইসময়ে নির্বাচন কমিশনের সচিব বলেছিলেন, দলীয় মনোনয়ন নেওয়ার ঘটনা সীমিত এলাকার মধ্যে হচ্ছে। তাই আচরণবিধি লংঘন হচ্ছেনা।
বারো নভেম্বর থেকে বিএনপির মনোনয়ন কিনতে আসা নেতাকর্মীদের ভিড় যখন আওয়ামী লীগের ভাড়া করা লোকেদের জমায়েতের চাইতে বেশী হয়ে গেছে। বিএনপির প্রধান কার্যালয়ের সামনের এলাকা কার্যত মহাসমাবেশের রুপ নিচ্ছে; এখন ইসি বলছে, এটি রাজনৈতিক দল ও প্রার্থী আচরণ বিধিমালার সুস্পষ্ট লংঘন।
একই দেশে দুই দলের জন্য দুই ভিন্ন আচরণ। এবং পশ্চিমা বিশ্বকে এরাই আশ্বস্ত করতে চায় এরা একটি নিরপেক্ষ ও অবাধ নির্বাচন উপহার দেবে। কি তামাশা।
