Every sentence of what PM Sheikh Hasina said to BBC Bangla in an interview a few days ago was full of lies. Hasina, the head of the fraudulently elected Bangladesh government, said in the interview: “If it is the truth that people could not cast their votes (in the last general elections) they would have launched a nationwide movement by now and we would have lost power.”
I am sure one day people of Bangladesh will succeed to end the fascist rule in the country. Hasina’s government cracks down heavily on all dissenting opinions. None in Bangladesh can muster courage to launch a movement against the government. People are so scared of reprisals from the government that they do not even make any political criticism.
While recollecting his days of writing during the Pakistani regime, former minister and Awami League supporter Rehman Sobhan, who is also known as an intellectual, said: “Sometimes I think how I wrote those articles then (during the Pakistani rule). Those days I could write just whatever crossed my mind. I was not scared of any reaction. But, these days I cannot write whatever I want. Now, after I have written anything, it takes as long as a week before I publish it. Raonaq (my wife) reads it at least five times before she issues her opinion. As everyone else is doing in this independent Bangladesh, I too ponder a long time before I write a sentence now. During the Pakistani rule or the Liberation War I could produce a write-up sitting on a desk for just two hours.”
It means, even during the Pakistani regime, none faced persecution for expressing his opinion the way we are facing now. Perhaps, the topic will be clear if I present some figures.
Around 2 million opposition BNP party leaders and workers have been framed in 80,000 criminal cases filed by police in the past few years. I think in no country such a huge number of political activists have ever faced criminal suits. Names were picked up from the list of the BNP committee members and cases were filed against them.
Sometimes police also filed cases against unknown people and later the names of BNP leaders and workers were included as suspects. Police filed cases involving people in alleged criminal incidents that had not taken place at all. Cases were filed against people for involvements in reported subversive incidents which took place while the suspects were away from the country, in jail or, after they have died. Cases of violence were filed against people who were bedridden or paralysed at the time of the incidents. In at least one case police identified a lightning strike as an explosion of bomb and filed cases against BNP workers accusing them of the “bomb attack”.
This is the way police, on behalf of the government, filed cases against the leaders and workers of the main opposition party of BNP. Police filed identical trumped up cases also against Hefajat and Jamaat. Nobody has the figure of total cases filed against all opposition parties.
Thousands of the opposition party leaders and workers have been picked up and sent to jail. Jails in Bangladesh are now jam-packed with inmates three times beyond their actual capacity.
Lakhs of opposition party leaders and workers have been forced to stay away from their homes. Many of them work as porters, security guards, rickshaw-pullers and taxi drivers. Many are even moving away from the country. Every day, on an average, 88 Bangladeshis apply for political asylum in European countries. Even a former Chief Justice of Bangladesh has been forced to leave the country. He has applied for political asylum in Canada.
Opposition leaders and workers are also becoming victims of extrajudicial killing and enforced disappearance. Around 100 people with dissenting opinions become victims of enforced disappearance in the country every year and they do not happen to return. Some thousands of opposition party leaders and workers have been killed in extrajudicial shootouts, euphemistically called cross-fires. It is one year since I have been forced to go underground after military intelligence agents launched a hunt for me. I am being hounded just because I am a critic of the government.
All political movements are being ruthlessly crushed in the country. A rally by Hefajat was attacked by police in Dhaka on May 5, 2013. Police surrounded the rallyists from three sides and began firing on them. Ghatak Dalal Nirmool Committee, a pro-government organisation, released a white paper in which it was reported that police shot dead 39 Hefajat activists during that operation.
In 2017-2018 two purely non-political movements took place in Bangladesh. One of them was a movement in which students sought reform in the system of quota in government jobs. Pro-government goons pounced on the male and female students and beat them up, before leaving them battered and bloodied. Leaders of the movement were arrested. And, the movement was silenced.
The second one was a movement in which school students demanded improved level of road safety. Hoodlums of Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party of Awami League, bashed up the school students in the presence of police, injured them and forced them to backtrack on the movement. Golam Rabbani, the general secretary of Chhatra League led the violent attack on the school students- boys and girls. Following an official strategy, police took along Chhatra League, during its operation against the students in the movement.
Hasina uses her state forces to silence all protests and resistances ruthlessly. Now she tells BBC Bangla that people should resort to mass movements if they cannot cast their votes. In Soviet Russia such an authoritarian rule remained in force for seven decades. No anti-government mass demonstration or movement took place there during this period. Nobody can say that the country was under good governance then.
The BBC Bangla journalist should have asked Hasina why her police and the goons of her party beat up the young school students, left them bloodied and forced them to withdraw from the road safety movement. Were those students in a movement to overthrow her government?
If the journalist did some good research in advance she could have trapped Hasina well, by using the prime minister’s own statements.
I am ready to interview Sheikh Hasina for the international media. I wonder if any foreign media outlet is keen to send me on this assignment.

তিনি বলেছেন, “মানুষ যদি সত্যিই ভোট দিতে না পারতো, তাহলে তাদের ডাকে সাড়া দিয়ে মানুষ আন্দোলনে নামত এবং আমরা ক্ষমতায় থাকতে পারতাম না।”
নিশ্চয়ই বাংলাদেশের মানুষ একদিন আন্দোলনে নামবে আর ফ্যাসিবাদকে উৎখাত করবে।
হাসিনা সরকার ভিন্নমতের উপরে এমন খড়্গহস্ত যে আন্দোলনে নামার এমনকি কোন রাজনৈতিক সমালোচনা করার সাহসও বাংলাদেশের মানুষ পায়না।
২০১৫ সালে সাবেক তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের মন্ত্রী ও আওয়ামী লীগের সমর্থক রেহমান সোবাহান পাকিস্তান শাসনামলে নিজের লেখার স্মৃতিচারণা করতে গিয়ে বলেছিলেন, “ওই সব দিনে ফিরে গেলে এটা ভাবি, কীভাবে এসব কথা সেদিন বলতাম। এসব কথা বলার সময় ডান-বাম চিন্তা করতাম না। এসব বলতে পারতাম, কারণ এগুলো ছিল মনের কথা। কিন্তু এখন কোনো লেখা লিখতে গেলে এটি প্রকাশের আগে এক সপ্তাহ লেগে যায় এবং পাঁচবার পড়ে মত দেন রওনক (তাঁর স্ত্রী)। স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের অন্য সবার মতো আমাকে আজকাল প্রতিটি শব্দ নিয়ে ভাবতে হয়। কিন্তু মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় এবং পাকিস্তানের সামরিক শাসনামলে আমরা টেবিলে বসেই দুই ঘণ্টায় যেকোনো কিছু লিখতে পারতাম।”
এর অর্থ হচ্ছে, পাকিস্তান আমলেও শুধুমাত্র মত প্রকাশের জন্য এতো নিগ্রহ হয়নি যা এখন হাসিনার আমলে হচ্ছে, এবং তা থেকে আওয়ামী লীগের এলিট সমর্থকেরাও রেহাই পাচ্ছেনা।
রাজনৈতিক নিগ্রহের কিছু ঘটনা ও কয়েকটা পরিসংখ্যান উল্লেখ করলে বিষয়টা হয়তো আরো পরিষ্কার হবে।
গত প্রায় পাঁচ বছরে আশি হাজার মামলা করা হয়েছে বিএনপির বিশ লাখ নেতা ও কর্মীকে আসামী করে। পৃথিবীতে এতো ব্যাপক সংখ্যক রাজনৈতিক নেতা কর্মীদের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা হওয়ার কোন নজির নেই। বিএনপির কমিটির তালিকা ধরে ধরে মামলা দেয়া হয়। প্রথমে অজ্ঞাতনামাদের নামে মামলা করে পরে বিএনপির নেতা কর্মীদের নাম সেখানে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়। এমন গায়েবী মামলা হয়েছে যেখানে কথিত অপরাধ সংগঠিতই হয়নি। এমনকি অনেক আগে মৃত, অপরাধ সংগঠনের সময়ে বিদেশে ছিলেন, পঙ্গু, মারাত্মক অসুস্থ, জেলে বন্দি এমন অনেকের নামেই নাশকতার মামলা দেয়া হয়েছে। এমনকি বজ্রপাতের শব্দকে বোমা বিস্ফোরণের শব্দ বলে দাবী করে পুলিশ বিএনপির কর্মীদের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা দিয়েছে। এটা শুধু বিএনপির মামলার হিসাব। এর বাইরে জামায়াত ও হেফাজতের নামেও অসংখ্য মামলা আছে। সব মিলিয়ে বিরোধী নেতা কর্মিদের নামে কত মামলা আছে সেটা সম্ভবত কেউই জানেনা। সারা দেশের জেলগুলোতে সেগুলোর ধারণ ক্ষমতার চাইতে তিনগুণ বেশী বন্দী রয়েছে। তাদের বিশাল এক অংশই বিরোধীদলের সদস্য।
লাখ লাখ বিরোধী নেতা কর্মী ঘরছাড়া। তারা ঢাকায় দারোয়ান বা মুটের কাজ করে, ট্যাক্সিক্যাব, রিক্সা চালায়। অনেকে দেশান্তরি হতেও বাধ্য হয়েছে। প্রত্যাকদিন ৮৮ জন বাংলাদেশী ইউরোপে রাজনৈতিক আশ্রয় প্রার্থনা করে। এমনকি সাবেক প্রধান বিচারপতিকেও দেশ ছাড়তে বাধ্য করা হয়েছে। তিনিও কানাডায় রাজনৈতিক আশ্রয় প্রার্থনা করেছেন।
এছাড়াও আছে বিরোধী নেতা কর্মীদের গুম এবং বিচারবহির্ভূত হত্যা। এক বছরেই প্রায় একশোর মত ভিন্নমতের মানুষ গুম হয় বাংলাদেশে যারা কখনো আর ফিরে আসেনা। কয়েক হাজার বিরোধী নেতা কর্মীকে ক্রসফায়ারের নামে বিচার বহির্ভূতভাবে হত্যা করা হয়েছে। আমি নিজেই এক বছরের বেশি সময় ধরে শুধু লেখালেখির কারণে পলাতক জীবন যাপন করছি, কারণ সামরিক গোয়েন্দারা আমাকে খুঁজছে।
যে কোন রাজনৈতিক আন্দোলন নির্মমভাবে দমন কয়া হয় বাংলাদেশে। ২০১৩ সালের ৫ই মে হেফাজতের সমাবেশে তিনদিক থেকে ঘিরে ধরে গুলি চালিয়ে ছত্রভঙ্গ করে দেয়া হয়। সেই সময়ে দুই দিনের ঘটনায় মোট ৩৯ জন নিহত হয় বলে সরকার সমর্থক সংগঠন ঘাতক দালাল নির্মূল কমিটি শ্বেতপত্র প্রকাশ করেছিলো।
২০১৭-২০১৮ সালে নির্দোষ অরাজনৈতিক সামাজিক আন্দোলন সংগঠিত হয়েছিলো দুটো। একটা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্রদের সরকারী চাকুরিতে কোটা সংস্কারের দাবীতে আন্দোলন। এই আন্দোলন সরকার সমর্থক গুণ্ডারা পুলিশের ছত্রছায়ার ছাত্র ছাত্রী নির্বিশেষে পিটিয়ে, আহত করে, রক্তাক্ত করে স্তব্ধ করে দিয়েছিলো। শুধু তাই নয় আন্দোলনের নেতাদের গ্রেফতার করে ভয় দেখিয়ে নিশ্চুপ করিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে।
এরপরে হয়েছিলো স্কুলের ছাত্রদের নিরাপদ সড়কের আন্দোলন। এই আন্দোলন সরকারের ছাত্র সংগঠন ছাত্রলীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক গোলাম রব্বানির নেতৃত্বে সংগঠিত গুণ্ডাবাহিনী পুলিশের ছত্রছায়ায় ছোট ছোট বাচ্চাদের নির্মমভাবে পিটিয়ে রক্তাক্ত করে রাস্তা ছাড়া করে। এর আগে এই নিরাপদ সড়ক আন্দোলন মোকাবেলায় পুলিশের দশ দফা কর্ম পরিকল্পনা করা হয় । তার মধ্যে একটা দফা ছিলো “ছাত্রলীগকে পুলিশের সাথে রাখা”
এমন সব বিভতস নির্মমতা জারি রেখে শেখ হাসিনা সকল প্রতিবাদ প্রতিরোধকে টুঁটি চিপে বন্ধ করে। আর আজকে বিবিসিতে গিয়ে তিনি বলেন যে জনগণ ভোট না দিতে পারলে আন্দোলন করতো!!!!
সোভিয়েত রাশিয়ার কর্তৃত্ববাদী শাসন ৭০ বছর এভাবেই টিকে ছিলো। এই ৭০ বছরে সোভিয়েত রাশিয়ায় কোন আন্দোলন হয়নি বলে কি কেউ ধরে নেয় যে সেখানে সুশাসন ছিলো? শেখ হাসিনাকে বরং প্রশ্ন করা উচিত ছিলো ‘আপনি কেন গুণ্ডা আর পুলিশ লেলিয়ে এই ছোট ছোট ছেলেদের রক্তাক্ত করেছিলেন তাদের নিরাপদ সড়ক আন্দোলনের সময়?’ ওরা কি সরকার উতখাতের আন্দোলন করছিলো? যে সব সাংবাদিক এসব সাক্ষাতকার নেয়, তারা আগে থেকে যথেষ্ট হোমওয়ার্ক করে রাখলে এমন সাক্ষাতকারে উপযুক্ত প্রশ্ন করে শেখ হাসিনাকে তার নিজের কথার জালেই বন্দী করে ফেলা যেত।
আমি শেখ হাসিনার একটা সাক্ষাতকার নিতে চাই। কোন বিদেশী সংবাদ মাধ্যম কি আমাকে সেই সুযোগ দেবেন?
