The government and Election Commission (EC) have turned the institution of election into a farce in Bangladesh by indulging in unprecedented level of fraudulent practices.
On Thursday, people largely stayed away from casting their votes in Dhaka North City Corporation election. Different TV channels reported how the voting centres looked deserted in the absence of the voters throughout Thursday. Media published photos and video clips of election officials dozing or taking nap inside the voter-less voting centres. We also saw visuals of photo and video journalists eagerly waiting for some voters to turn up at voting centres. Even the chief election commissioner noted of the poor turnout of the voters at the voting centres on Thursday.
Pro-government TV channel of BTV set up fake queue of some people to fraudulently show them as voters lining up to cast their votes- it was reported by Dhaka Tribune. The TV channel which runs on taxpayers’ money resorted to cheating in attempt to save the face of the government.
The DNCC bypoll was conducted on Thursday following the death of former mayor Anisul Haque. The previous election, in which Haque won and became the mayor, had been boycotted by the opposition parties a few hours before the polling ended alleging irregularities. Around 37% voters cast their vote in that election. But, on Thursday, when according to the media the voter turnout was unprecedentedly poor, 31% voters cast their votes, according to the EC. Awami League candidate Atiqul Islam has won Thursday’s mayoral election bagging around 839,000 votes- double of what Anisul got in the previous election.
Bangladesh has turned into a country where cheating has in election has been institutionalised.

নজিরবিহীন জোচ্চুরি আর প্রতারণার মাধ্যমে নির্বাচন নামের প্রতিষ্ঠানকে সরকার প্রহসনে রূপান্তরিত করেছে।
বৃহস্পতিবারের ঢাকার মেয়র নির্বাচনে মানুষ ভোটই দিতে যায়নি। নানা নিউজ চ্যানেল ভোটার উপস্থিতির হতাশাজনক পরিস্থিতির খবর সারা দিনই পরিবেশন করে গেছে। প্রকাশিত হয়েছে শূন্য ভোটকেন্দ্রে ভোট কর্মকর্তাদের ঘুমানোর বা অলসভাবে সময় কাটানোর দৃশ্য, অসংখ্য ক্যামেরাসহ সাংবাদিকদের ভোটারদের জন্য অপেক্ষার দৃশ্য। প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার নিজেও স্বীকার করেছেন ভোটার উপস্থিতি কম।
বিটিভি ফেক ভোটারের লাইন তৈরি করে টিভির জন্য ভিডিও ফুটেজ নিয়েছে। রাষ্ট্রীয় টিভি চ্যানেল যা জনগণের ট্যাক্সের পয়সায় চলে সেই বিটিভি ভুয়া ভোটারদের লাইন তৈরি করে প্রতারণার আশ্রয় নিয়েছে, এটা পরিষ্কার। তবে এই তথাকথিত নির্বাচনে এটাই একমাত্র প্রতারণা নয়। নির্বাচনের প্রচারিত ফলাফল দেখলে বুঝা যায় সেখানেও প্রতারণার আশ্রয় নেয়া হয়েছে।
যার মৃত্যুর জন্য এই আসনে উপনির্বাচন হলো, সেই আনিসুল হক যেই নির্বাচনে মেয়র নির্বাচিত হয়েছিলো সেই নির্বাচনে সকল দল অংশ নিয়েছিলো। উৎসাহ নিয়েই ভোটারেরা ভোট দিতে গিয়েছিলো। অনিয়মের অভিযোগ তুলে বিরোধী দলগুলো নির্বাচন শেষ হওয়ার কয়েক ঘন্টা আগে নির্বাচন বয়কট করে। সেই অংশগ্রহণমূলক নির্বাচনে ভোট পড়েছিলো ৩৭ শতাংশ। আর ফাঁকা ভোটকেন্দ্রের বৃহস্পতিবারের নির্বাচনে নাকি ভোট পড়েছে ৩১ শতাংশ!!
আনিসুল হক যে পরিমানে ভোট পেয়েছিলেন। গতকাল আতিকুল হক সেই শূন্য আসনে তার দ্বিগুণ ভোট পেয়েছেন বলে দাবী করা হচ্ছে।
