Awami League’s publicity secretary Hasan Mahmud has humiliated Chief Justice of Bangladesh Surendra Kumar Sinha in a racist style pointing him to his “minority” and “tribal” roots. Mahmud said: “Had Sheikh Hasina not been the Prime Minister, for you, a Maulavi Bazar court lawyer, it would have been impossible to become a high court judge. in 1999, when Shekh Hasina was our PM and Abdul Matin Khasru was the presidium member of our party the law minister elevated you as a High Court judge for two reasons- because you were from the minority community and belonged to a tribe. You were made a judge to only to help set up an example that one from the backward class too can rise to the position of a high court judge.
We condemn this comment by a senior Awami League leader. His obnoxious comment reflects his racist character.
Racism is condemned even in Islam. Islam does not allow supremacy of any individual or group and is known for its call for equality. Is Mahmud not aware of such basic tenets of Islam?
Mahmud is free to criticise Justice Sinha. But he must do it in a civilised manner. He cannot abuse him identifying him by his community or tribe in such derogatory style. The ruling party has turned blind in its rage and its leaders have no control over their language. We have to unitedly stand against such racist and humiliating behaviour of the senior Awami League leader.
আওয়ামীলীগের প্রচার সম্পাদক হাসান মাহমুদ প্রধান বিচারপতি সুরেন্দ্র কুমার সিনহার‘সংখ্যালঘু’, ‘উপজাতীয়’ পরিচয় নিয়ে কটাক্ষ করে বলেছেন, “‘শেখ হাসিনা যদি প্রধানমন্ত্রী না হতো আপনার মতো মৌলভীবাজার কোর্টের আইনজীবী কোনোদিন হাইকোর্টের বিচারপতি হতে পারতেন না। আপনি ১৯৯৯ সালে মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা যখন বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী আব্দুল মতিন খসরু সাহেব আমাদের দলের প্রেসিডিয়াম সদস্য যখন আইনমন্ত্রী তখন আপনাকে দুটি বিবেচনায় আপনাকে হাইকোর্টের বিচারপতি করা হয়েছিল। প্রথমত আপনি সংখ্যালঘু সম্প্রদায়ের, দ্বিতীয়ত আপনি উপজাতীয় সম্প্রদায়ের। এই বিবেচনায় বাংলাদেশের সবার যে সমান অধিকার এই অনগ্রসর শ্রেণি থেকেও যে বিচারপতি হতে পারে সেই উদাহরণ সৃষ্টি করার জন্যই আপনাকে বিচারপতি করা হয়েছিল’
আমরা হাসান মাহমুদের এই বক্তব্যের কঠোর নিন্দা করি। তিনি কোন অবস্থাতেই প্রধান বিচারপতি জাত তুলে অপমান করতে পারেন না,জাত তুলে অপমান করাটা একটা নিম্নস্তরের বর্ণবাদীতা।
একালে এটা স্পষ্ট যে বর্ণবাদীতা কোন একটা জাত গোষ্ঠিকে নীচু দেখানো আর নিজেকে শ্রেষ্ঠ বলা ভয়ানক বিপদজনক। ইসলামও যে কোন ধরণের জাতিবাদের বিরুদ্ধে ফলে বর্ণবাদীতারও বিরুদ্ধে কঠোর । ইসলাম এক ‘তৌহিদে’, মানব জনগোষ্ঠির এক উম্মায় মিলিত হবার কথা বলে।
বিচারপতি সিনহার সম্পর্কে তার যদি কোন সমালোচনা থাকে সেটা তিনি অবশ্যই করতেই পারেন। কিন্তু কোন অবস্থাতেই জাত তুলে অপমান করতে পারেন না। এই নিম্নস্তরের বর্ণবাদীতার বিরুদ্ধে আমাদের রুখে দাড়াতে হবে। শাসক দল ক্ষোভে আক্রোশে দিশেহারা হয়ে তাঁদের কান্ডজ্ঞানের উপরে ভাষার উপরে নিয়ন্ত্রণ হারিয়ে ফেলেছে। বর্ণবাদী হাসান মাহমুদের প্রধান বিচারপতির জাত তুলে কটাক্ষ করার তীব্র নিন্দা জানাই।
